We've got a fascinating game on our hands, I think England's spin options will be important through the middle overs but I still see the initial new-ball burst from Woakes, Curran and Wood as an opportunity to make some early inroads.

Root was the only batter to pass 50, with frustrations for England as plenty of them made starts but each time they looked like starting to kick on, New Zealand struck.

Jonny Bairstow made 33, Harry Brook 25 and Jos Buttler showed glimpses of his magic in his 43 before he was dismissed by Matt Henry.

Henry was magnificent with 3-48 in scorching conditions, as was Mitchell Santner with 2-37.

It's also worth bearing in mind that the group stage of this tournament is so long that teams can afford to take a bit of time to get going, and figure out the conditions etc.

And the biggest positive from that innings was surely Joe Root getting back to his brilliant best. A classy 77 from England's star man.

For all that innings' imperfections, it showed how useful it is that we bat down to 11. Having bowlers who can bat has really aided our versatility as a side.

    Cheers, Stephan.

In-and-out was very much the theme of that innings from England, exemplified by this gem of a stat from TMS' finest Andy Zaltzman:

"One innings into the World Cup, and already a sensational piece of planet-shattering history - all 11 England players make double figures, the first time any team has done so in ODIs (men's & women's)."

Rashid and Wood, by the way, added 30 from 26 balls for the last wicket. You wonder how important that might be.

New Zealand's Glenn Phillips: "We were brilliant today. Yeah, they got off to a bit of a flyer but for our bowlers to bring it back through the middle was very, very pleasing.

"I wasn't necessarily expecting to bowl much today. When we found out that Stokes wasn't playing today that was obviously one less left-hander so that played into it a little. We've got plenty of bowling options though and Tom [Latham] used them brilliantly.

"The pitch is playing well. There was a bit of nibble early on for our seamers so we can expect more of that but it still looks good to bat on and might even get better.

"We know how deep they bat so to keep them to anything under 300, on a pitch like this and with a lightning outfield, we are very happy."

Our colleague Marc Higginson has been working with CricViz and written a data based preview for this World Cup. According to Marc and those with the figures "it's hard to measure because of on-the-day conditions etc, but the average first-innings score in ODIs played in India since the last World Cup is 276."

New Zealand are high-fiving each other as they walk off, congratulating each other on what they believe is a job well done to restrict England to 282-9.

But on the flip side, we can see a wearing pitch and you can see that it is really dusting up. New Zealand's bowlers went to slower balls and they did grip, England's bowlers will have noted that.

It seems like a score that is defendable but not out of the realms of chasing.

You know what, despite England being below their best, that will take some chasing. New Zealand need 283 to win. Not at all a gimme.

All of the England team have made double figures. First time in an ODI, apparently.

10 first-class hundreds! Unusual areas! Boshington from Rashid, over mid-wicket for six of the best.

This is my first time in India and it’s fascinating how much you can purchase from your seats. There are fellas bringing around ice cream, samosas, curry, ice tea, the works. An ice tea costs the equivalent of £1.

Trent Boult has been dishing out some toe-crushers. Mark Wood does well to keep his feet out of the way. Five singles from it. Boult ends with 1-48. Neesham to bowl the last.

Swimming against the tide, I think England have enough runs. Doesn’t look an easy surface. Also great to see Root back in the runs.

Behave, Richard. Matthew Mott took England to the T20 World Cup. Next you'll be telling me that Daniel Craig wasn't the best James Bond. Or Girls Aloud never made a good record.

When is anybody going to call out Matthew Mott for the absolutely appalling job he has done with England. This was a team that played fearless cricket and beat everything in front of it. They are now an average team that is back to playing cautious cricket by numbers. They will get a terrible score here and be demolished by New Zealand. He has absolutely destroyed this talented team in the space of two years.
