John Jefferis: NRR is not a cumulative total, it is worked out as an average. Therefore by winning comfortably it can still come down as it wasn’t by as big a margin as the England match.

In 2023, it feels like we should have come up with a better decider than net run-rate. Head to head? Yes, I know a game could get rained off, but head to head in first instance? Or get the two teams together for a five-over shootout? Or a game of Brian Lara Cricket? Woakes continues. This is how he got Liton Das...

NRR is tricky even when you understand it. Essentially, it is combined across all of your games, so because New Zealand's margin of victory against Netherlands was smaller then it was against England, their NRR comes down a bit.

It'll be interesting to see what Bangladesh do here because the win looks a long shot. Will they look to bat the overs to protect their net run-rate?

  8. Ban 131-5published at 23 overs

    Target 365

Are you sure about that, George? I think if you're bowled out your run-rate is calculated across the 50 overs. That's why teams are often keen to bat out the overs, even if they have no chance of winning.

If we score 500 off 50 overs then our run rate is 10 per over. If Bangladesh get 100 all out off 10 overs then they are 10 per over as well. So our Net Run Rate is 0. But if Bangladesh score 200-4 off 50 overs then their run rate is 4 and our net run rate is +6 and theirs is -6. You can be beaten badly or win well but if your ran rate is fast enough then your Net Run Rate may not be badly affected.

Aaah, net run rate, a mystery to us all. I can never understand why, after each team in a league has played one game, the net run rate across the league adds up to zero (as you'd expect, like goal difference). But once each team has played a few games, it doesn't add up to zero - where do the extra runs go?

Towhid Hriody is the new man, a right-hander playing his 19th ODI. Rashid has a slip in place, but can only serve up some leg-stump dross. Five singles from the over.

It's another cutter. Liton Das thought it was going to come back in to him and it just went straight on.

It was a better length as well and just gets a feather behind.

Chris Woakes gets the wicket a little bit against the run of play. It's the big one of Liton Das. He's done a good job but not quite enough for his side.

Bangladesh well and truly in trouble.

    There is that wicket!

Liton Das is feeling outside the off stump and gets a tiny feather to Jos Buttler. The keeper/skipper didn't seem too sure but Chris Woakes knew. That's a hammer blow to Bangladesh.

England might soon get fed up of this partnership. Chris Woakes is back on. I once tried to check into a hotel room in Cardiff and was turned down. "I'm sorry," the receptionist said. "That room has been given to a Mr Woakes." Livid.

I worry that Sam Curran will develop into a jack of all trades, master of none when it comes to ODI bowling. England need to decide with the balance of seam and spin whether they want him opening or first change before he comes back in the last 10.

Can anyone explain how net run rate works? How come NZ's was plus 2.149 after beating England, but after another big win yesterday is now only plus 1.958?
