  1. SA 96-0published at 16.2 overs

First ball after drinks and Quinton de Kock finds the boundary.

He aimed a big shot leg side, mistimed it but still found the gap for four.

Four more! A reverse sweep and this one is middled, past short third and it races away to put really pressure on Adam Zampa early in the over.

It was a really big decision for Australia to come in with players that are under-done. It could work into their favour later in the tournament because they will be fresh but it is a risk.

This is just the start that South Africa would have wanted but Australia have had chances.

  5. 50 runs

50 for Quinton de Kockpublished at 16 overs

    SA 88-0

Quinton de Kock continues his fine start to the tournament as he pushes a single to bring up his half-century from 51 balls.

Five fours and two sixes for the left-hander and he's still got plenty more gears to go to.

Australia have plenty to discuss as the players take drinks.

It's a skill they work on so much. Instead of throwing it under arm he's done a sidearm flick and tossed it over his head. He did all the hard work, got into a good position but just too much on the throw.

  7. dropped catch

Bavuma dropped on 31published at 15.4 overs

    SA 87-0

A failed relay catch in the deep and Temba Bavuma survives again!

Bavuma had heaved the ball leg side, sub fielder Sean Abbott runs back to take it and then tries to throw it back to Mitchell Starc as he goes over the rope.

However, he puts too much on the throw and sends it over Starc's head. Another let off for Bavuma.

  8. SA 84-0published at 15.1 overs

Temba Bavuma welcomes Marcus Stoinis to the attack by pumping his first ball over mid-on for four.

That might help the Proteas skipper get going.

  9. SA 80-0published at 15 overs

    De Kock 49, Bavuma 25

Quinton de Kock is a man in form and he's making the most of it.

He takes on the slower tempter from Adam Zampa to end the over and lifts it up and over mid-off with ease. Four runs.

  10. SA 74-0published at 14 overs

Mitchell Marsh replaces Pat Cummins and gets through his first over without much trouble.

Just six from the over as South Africa continue to tick along nicely. They're really building a strong platform for that powerful middle-order.

Temba Bavuma definitely got something on that, but it struck the wicketkeeper on the knee. Josh Inglis could not quite take that on the rebound.

  12. dropped catch

Bavuma dropped on 19published at 13 overs

    SA 68-0

Adam Zampa into the attack and rips one past Temba Bavuma's outside edge.

Was it past the edge or did it take it?

It was an edge! A big nick, in fact, but Josh Inglis can't take it stood up to the stumps. It misses his gloves and then bounces off his thigh and goes to ground.

  13. SA 66-0published at 12 overs

    De Kock 41, Bavuma 19

Pat Cummins comes back well after that first-ball six and concedes just a single from the next five balls.

Quinton de Kock really does look in a good form. This is an excellent start by South Africa. Their powerhouse batters are still to come. Potentially, this could be a really big score.

  15. 6 runs

    SA 65-0published at 11.1 overs

Short from Pat Cummins and Quinton de Kock hooks it over fine leg for six!

I don't think that came out of the middle of the bat but there was still more than enough on it to carry comfortably into the stands.

South Africa's spinners Tabraiz Shamsi and Keshav Maharaj will not mind seeing the ball spin like that. That looks a good selection now.

  17. SA 59-0published at 11 overs

    So close!

Temba Bavuma goes back to try and guide Glenn Maxwell to third but the ball turns back sharply, beats the bat and only just goes over the top of off stump.

I am a little bit concerned about how Temba Bavuma is playing. He carries a lot of pressure because there's so much extra expectation as the captain of South Africa.

  19. 50 runs

    SA 53-0published at 10 overs

Quinton de Kock brings up the 50 for South Africa with a boundary from the last ball of the powerplay.

He cleared his front leg and muscled Pat Cummins over the leg side for four.

    Not pretty but plenty effective.

I think Adam Zampa lost the ball in the glare of the sun. He had time to get there but didn't know what the destination was.
