We're not conducting a post-mortem just yet. It does feel very deflating and low.

It doesn't strike me as the sort of dressing room where people will point fingers because some people have had bad games.

It will be the more people getting around each other and trying to deal with it collectively. They need to stay together and honestly reflect.

Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi: "I am quite happy, the whole team is happy. This is the best win we have got, we will be full of confidence and it is great for our country."

The 114-run opening partnership: "A lot of credit because of the way they started, they gave momentum to us. Again though, we lost some back-to-back wickets today. We have to think about that, we had some good starts but didn't continue."

Gurbaz's performance: "Gurbaz hasn't had many chances in the last couple of years, he got that today and he deserves it."

Mujeeb now an all-rounder?: "I think so yes, he batted brilliantly against India and today, he led from the front and scored important runs for us."

We know England have had a lot of success chasing but they were on the back foot in the field and that was set by Jos Buttler letting that ball through his legs. England never got the pressure back on Afghanistan.

Maybe runs on the board it might have been different but this is a game England should be winning. It shows how well Afghanistan played and how off colour England were.

England captain Jos Buttler: "It is disappointing. Having won the toss and electing to field, me missing the ball down the leg side first ball kind of set the tone early on.

"It's a tough loss to take. Congratulations to Afghanistan, they outplayed us today.

"It's always about execution and throughout the game we were not at the level we wanted to be consistently enough. That's the main area we lost the game.

"You've got to find ways to impose yourself on the game and execute your skill.

"They've got a really skilful attack, some fantastic spinners especially. The dew didn't really come in as we expected, the ball held a little bit, there was a bit of indifferent bounce and they put us under pressure."

There are going to be a lot of meetings, a lot of conversations and a lot of head scratching over the next 48 hours.

It's going to be so emotional in that England dressing room right now, so quiet. It's akin to that defeat by Bangladesh in 2015, although that one sent them out, they will be just as dejected now.

They're going to have to pick themselves up because they are not technically out of the tournament. But they're going to need to change something and change it quick if they're going to compete against the best teams in the world.

England captain Jos Buttler brutally honest in his assessment at the post-match presentation as he acknowledges his side "were not good enough" and gives credit to Afghanistan who "outplayed us".

Is it one of the biggest shocks we've ever had in a World Cup?

Afghanistan had only won one of 17 games before today.

England didn't start well or finish well with the ball then, with the bat, they lost consistent wickets. They didn't deserve to win today.

The winning moment belonged to Rashid Khan, though.

Even Afghanistan coach Jonathan Trott managed to break into a smile.

Afghanistan's Mujeeb Ur Rahman took 3-51, including the wickets of Joe Root and Harry Brook, and whacked a 16-ball 28 with the bat.

Afghanistan spinner and Player of the Match Mujeeb Ur Rahman: "It's a very proud moment to be here in the World Cup beating the last champions, it is a good moment for the whole nation and the team. A wonderful performance for the bowlers and the batters."

Personal feelings on role in the win?: "As a spinner, it is pretty hard to bowl in the powerplay but it is something I have been working on in the nets. I'm always trying my best to bowl stump to stump and make it simple for myself. That is where I am enjoying my bowling."

Dealing with the dew?: "We know that the dew is going to come in and play a bit, that's why I wanted to bowl in the first six overs and in the powerplay. I just wanted to hit the right area and with the dew, you get the right result."

Will you get moved up the batting order?: "It's always about the management, the players have given me the confidence in the nets. That's the area I want to contribute in, that 20/25 runs can help and that is how I want to prepare in that position.

"This trophy is for the people back home who have been affected by the earthquake. As players and as a team, I wanted to dedicate my award to them."

England are now hanging by a thread in this competition. What a performance by Afghanistan.

That first partnership was 114 runs and that really set it up. Gurbaz batted intelligently with aggression to score 80 from 67 balls.

He kept out the good balls and showed discipline. That just eked its way through the Afghanistan team.

This is a huge shock as Afghanistan win only their second game at a 50-over World Cup.

It leaves England. The all-conquering white-ball maestros. Holders of the 50-over and T20 World Cups. Humbled.
