This partnership is key for England, obviously. We know Chris Woakes can but it's a case of how long can he bat for. So it's on Sam Curran and Harry Brook to do the bulk of the work. Harry Brook is showing great maturity.

Just two runs come from that over, a single each for Curran and Brook off the over's first two balls.

Rashid Khan continues for a sixth straight over and England could really do with seeing him off with these two still out in the middle.

Bought up with a single, there is not too much in the form of celebrations from Harry Brook, but it has been a pleasing knocking from him so far, considering his struggles in the World Cup's earlier matches.

You feel at the minimum, he needs to double that to give England any hope.

We are halfway through the chase and halfway through Rashid Khan's overs. He sits on 1-19, with England needing 153 more at the half way point.

He has restricted the scoreboard and while England are not needing to completely go for it in terms of boundaries, they will want to keep the runs coming at a steady rate.

This is how the worm currently looks.

England are closing on the Afghanistan one but the five wickets down is a serious issue.

That was sliding down the leg side and Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi is not interested in a review.

  7. Eng 130-5published at 24.3 overs

    Target 285

Half a shout of lbw there from Afghanistan as Rashid Khan finds Brook's front pad, but it looks as if that was going down the leg side. Afghanistan opt not to review, which is probably the smart call.

  8. Eng 129-5published at 24 overs

    Target 285

There was a costly spell for Afghanistan where they want almost nine overs without scoring a boundary in their innings.

For England, it is now 15 deliveries without one, just three singles come off Mohammad Nabi's latest over.

Cricinfo's Matt Roller: Another uncharacteristically tame performance from England's batters, Harry Brook apart: none of their five dismissals have been attempting to hit a boundary. Not much evidence of a reaction to Jos Buttler's messaging around "falling on the positive side".

Here is how Livingstone's innings came to an end off the bowling of Rashid Khan. The defending world champions will hope that is the only wicket Afghanistan's danger man takes today.

  11. Eng 126-5published at 23 overs

    Target 285

Rashid Khan with a very good over there, only conceding one run to Sam Curran in the over's penultimate ball.

England are struggling to get Brook on strike right now and that needs to change to allow Curran to get set and remain calm.

  12. Postpublished at 15:40 British Summer Time 15 October 2023

Harry Brook has been the sole shining light so far for England with the bat, hitting Naveen for back-to-back boundaries earlier.

Afghanistan understand England have the depth in their batting order, in addition to the dew factor. I've seen Afghanistan get into good positions against Pakistan and India in recent years and squander them.

  14. Eng 125-5published at 22 overs

    Target 285

Two further singles come from the end of Azmatullah's over, going for six in total, with Sam Curran remaining on strike.

Afghanistan have been excellent for large parts of this game and the same cannot be said for England.

  15. Eng 123-5published at 21.3 overs

    Target 285

Brilliant from Harry Brook, uses the pace of the pitch and cuts that away for four, with the ball racing towards the rope.

Azmatullah Omarzai has been a touch on the expensive side with the ball so far and England could do with extending that for as long as possible.

England's problem against NZ was gifting cheap wickets, and they're up to their usual tricks again today, against weaker opponents. Not panicking quite yet, but this would be a hugely embarrassing defeat, no disrespect to Afghanistan intended. They can't seriously be hopeful of defending their trophy with such shoddy form, surely?

England are in serious trouble. Harry Brook needs to make a match-winning hundred.

  18. Eng 119-5published at 21 overs

    Target 285

Four singles come from the over, two either side of that wicket of Liam Livingstone.

Harry Brook is well set and he has over a third of England's total runs. The problem is finding someone to stay with him.

A big ask for Sam Curran and Brook, who you feel needs to make a good 100 at least to stand any chance of victory.

Afghanistan have been so tenacious here. They have Rashid Khan to bowl at the lower order and England's tail is slightly longer than usual because they played the extra bowler.

Livingstone lbw b Rashid Khan 10 (Eng 117-5)

Disaster for England. Livingstone goes and there was never any real doubt that he was out.

Rashid Khan shows his quality and Livingstone's innings comes to an abrupt end.

Sam Curran comes out with England still needing 168 more to win.
