Ooooft, what a ripper that is to start!

It's trademark Mitchell Starc with a vicious swinging yorker that has Pathum Nissanka in a right tangle.

It's given not out on the field, and there's a long debate about whether it hit the pad first, before Pat Cummins eventually opts to review.

The match balls are delivered to the umpires on their little truck, followed by the teams and the anthems.

World Cups are always a treat to hear the anthems of teams you don't often get to listen to, and Sri Lanka's is catchy but it does go on for quite a while.

Australia's is a belter, as always, and we're ready to go with two teams absolutely desperate for victory.

Australia captain Pat Cummins: "We would have batted as well but I don't think it'll make too much of a difference.

"We had a day off and then a couple of big training sessions and we're clear on the areas that we need to improve on.

"We have been well off our best but we know that if we can get back to that, we are as good as anyone in the world."

Sri Lanka captain Kusal Mendis: "The pitch is looking good but in the second half it might turn and that is why we're batting first.

"We watched the previous match also and the wicket seems to be better in the first innings and we're going in with a couple of spinners.

"We're making two changes. It is unfortunate that Dasun Shanaka has picked up the injury.

"I reckon the par score is around 280-300 and hopefully we can get that good score on this pitch."

  6. Sri Lanka win the toss and bat firstpublished at 09:18 British Summer Time 16 October 2023

This is pretty much must-win territory for both teams now, as they have both lost their first two games.

Kusal Mendis is now Sri Lanka captain after an injury to Dasun Shanaka ruled him out of the tournament - and he gets the first small win of the day by choosing to bat first.

    Morning!

Having just got back from a week on my honeymoon in the Spanish sunshine, this morning's alarm was quite a shock to the system.

But we're back with more World Cup action after England's shock defeat yesterday, as Australia take on Sri Lanka in Lucknow.
