If New Zealand are going to win this they're going to have to get on with it and bat Afghanistan out of the game.

Afghanistan's highest World Cup score is the 284 they made against England on Sunday.

  2. NZ 185-4published at 40 overs

    Phillips 37, Lathan 34

Three singles and a wide from Mohammad Nabi's latest over brings us to the 40 over mark.

Tim Southee runs out to the middle with a change of gloves for both batters. Has he also brought a message to attack from the New Zealand dressing room?

  3. NZ 183-4published at 39 overs

Rashid Khan waves his hands out furiously again as Tom Latham plays an uppish sweep-shot that lands a few yards short of the fielder at backward square leg.

Farooqi is the subject of Rashid's ire, though I'm not sure he realistically could have got there even with a dive.

I think New Zealand's first goal will be how to get to the 40th over. Then fielding sides often get quite defensive in their final 10 overs. They've got big hitters in Mark Chapman and Mitchell Santner, if they go at eight an hour that's around 270.

Then use the pace of Lockie Ferguson and Trent Boult to blast through the top order, which is where a high percentage of Afghanistan's runs are.

That lbw shout from Rashid Khan aside, there have not been too many scares for this New Zealand pair.

It feels like they have set the platform for a late push once we get into the final 10.

These two have pushed really hard between the wickets when the boundaries haven't been coming easily, and that is so important of easing the pressure when the bowling side is going well.

Glenn Phillips is getting going now. He is such a dangerous player.

  8. NZ 173-4published at 37 overs

To run salt into the wounds Glenn Phillips clips the next delivery off his pads for four.

Rashid Khan is not a happy bunny.

  9. Not outpublished at 36.3 overs

It has saved him. It is umpire's call for impact so Phillips survives and Afghanistan retain the review.

Glenn Phillips has taken a big stride forward. Has that saved him?

  11. Afghanistan reviewpublished at 36.3 overs

Rashid Khan returns and hits Glenn Phillips on the knee roll before setting off with a Stuart Broad-esque celeb-appeal.

Umpire Joel Wilson says no, but Afghanistan send it upstairs.

It can be very difficult to take wickets in the middle overs in ODI cricket so when you get those chances, you have got to take them.

You'd say India and New Zealand are the only two teams that have managed to do that so far.

We have seen dropped catches cost a lot of runs in this tournament.

Glenn Phillips is getting quite frustrated. He is playing some lovely shots but keeps picking out the fielders.

  14. NZ 167-4published at 36 overs

Another change of bowling as seamer Fazalhaq Farooqi returns.

Just the four singles come off it, with these two New Zealand batters having near-identical records - Glenn Phillips is 28 from 44, Tom Latham is 27 from 42.

New Zealand have chewed up a few dots but the key is that they haven't panicked.

But I have been impressed with the Afghanistan bowlers and how they have built that pressure. They have given very little away.

This is just the partnership that New Zealand needed. They have both been very calm and very mature, not panicking after the three quick wickets.

  17. NZ 163-4published at 35 overs

Azmat was the man out there at deep mid-wicket, I think he would have pouched it had he been back on the rope.

Three singles and a wide from Mujeeb's latest over brings up the 50 partnership. It has not been particularly explosive, but they have played the match situation well.

That's a drop for me. It's gone over his head and he was five or six yards off the boundary. If he'd been back on the rope, it would have been a simple catch.

No wonder Nabi doesn't look happy.

That was perilously close to deep the fielder at deep mid-wicket.

  20. 6 runs

    NZ 159-4published at 34 overs

    Out of nowhere.

Glenn Phillips has not taken many risks when facing Mohammad Nabi, but he does this time as he rocks back and powers the ball over deep mid-wicket.

It would have been a catching opportunity but the man out there had stepped in a few yards earlier in the over so it flew just above his head.
