You know you are in a bad position when Mark Wood is hitting sixes but can't even muster a smile, it has been that bad for England.

This is England's highest ever ninth-wicket partnership in a World Cup match.
Ha!
Into the stands again!
Mark Wood didn't bowl his best but he's absolutely whacking it out there.
Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler can at least smile and clap from the dressing room.

It is a hopelessly lost cause for England, but what is supposedly the last pair is showing spirit and landing some blows.
Woody! A four and a six to start Maharaj's second over, and Mark Wood moves to 36 from 14 balls.
Gus Atkinson has 35 from 20 at the other end.
England aren't going down in a whimper, at least.

If this is England's last pair, at least they are providing some entertainment.
Hello, Gus Atkinson!
England's number nine takes a fancying to Kagiso Rabada, no less.
He crunches four boundaries from the over and that brings up a 50 stand.
Without Topley, this'll be England's last wicket so they might as well make it count.

We are hearing that Reece Topley might not bat, so in theory, the next wicket and this game is over.
Mark Wood is going to have some fun, and why not?
He launches Keshav Maharaj's third ball into the stands for six.
Ffion Wynne is here to take you through to the close.

De Kock called for that, which surprised me. Williams left it for him. That proved to be the wrong call.
Gus Atkinson top edges a pull off Lungi Ngidi. over the head of Quinton de Kock.
The South Africa wicketkeeper turns in pursuit and gets a glove on it after diving but cannot hang on.

From a South African point of view, what a comeback that is after their defeat to Netherlands.
Lungi Ngidi, a yellow sweatband on each arm, continues as South Africa look to wrap this up.
Gus Atkinson smears a drive down the ground for four off his third ball. Nice shot from the World Cup debutant.
Only Harry Brook (17) has scored more runs for England today than Mark Wood (16) and Gus Atkinson (15).

Wood smashes another six over cow corner, he is a very watchable hitter. He is a great entertainer, not the best day for him with the ball but he is having some fun with the bat.

A lot of teams get concerned about dew, but that only really affects games in the final 10-12 overs or so. In 50-over cricket, it is just not that big of a factor.
It feels like to me England have gone too heavy on the stats with their decision to bat second here, with the dew factor.
Right back at the national anthems you could see the players melting in the heat. By the time they came out to bat they were mentally and physically drained.
Common sense at the toss was required.
Anyway, Mark Wood is providing some late-order entertainment, hitting sixes off Marco Jansen either side of being dropped by David Miller at mid-wicket.

I was very surprised to see England's line-up, going back to their old ways pre-2019 with Adil Rashid coming in to bat at No.8. The last few years, they have been batting deep, with Rashid not coming in until No.10.
Here's how Adil Rashid was dismissed by Gerald Coetzee not long ago.
I say not long ago, all of England's wickets were not that long ago.

Sometimes in sport, at times you turn up and other teams in the tournament are just better than you. This team is nowhere near as good as the one in 2019, and they weren't great then until the semi-final win over Australia and they should have lost the final.
