We should be taking 50-over cricket more seriously at home. Our current competition is a development one. We know our schedule is not right in England, our 50-over is not fit for purpose in my view, it's just a development tool for counties.

Jos Buttler is now talking to the press in Bengaluru.

"It's never through a lack of effort," he says. "This tournament has gone nowhere near the way we wanted to. There is no secret.

"I've been a long way short of my best. As a leader you want to lead from the front and I've not been able to do that."

England captain Jos Buttler: "It's incredibly tough, an incredibly disappointing tournament. As captain, you feel that a lot.

"We've been short of our best by a very long way. I'm disappointed for myself and the boys that we've not shown a good account of ourselves.

"That's the question we're trying to answer. There's no clear answer. If there was one golden nugget that we're not doing then we'd pick that up.

"I can't fault the guys' efforts, we're just a long way short of our best. As captain, you want to lead from the front and play well. I've been a long way short of my best and that's filtered through the rest."

I think they've had a less than ideal period of four years. Other forces in world cricket have meant their focus has been elsewhere. Especially in the final year prior to the tournament, you want to know what your positions are. In the 2015 World Cup, which I played in, we didn't play the right style of cricket, but we didn't chop and change our line-up. England don't seem to have known their best XI.

One thing Trevor Bayliss used to talk about was smart cricket, knowing what your team needs from you at that stage of the game.

I think the lack of clarity has seen them caught between two stools, between wanting to be committed and believing that you can. Then you get shots like Jonny Bairstow's dismissal.

It's not through lack of effort. Every game we've looked like a nervous team when we lose one or two wickets, then the inevitable happens.

Jos Buttler is talking. "There is no clear answer at the moment," he says.

    A bit of an understatement.

England have won only one of their five matches in this tournament. They are ninth in the table, above only the Netherlands.

Sri Lanka go fifth, two points off the top four. They might be thinking of an outside run on the semis.

As professionals they should feel embarrassed by their performances in this tournament. We can only hope they play for pride (damaged though it may be) in the remaining fixtures.

Without sticking the boot in, England's next two games are against India and Australia. It could get worse from here.

It must be hugely frustrating being in that England dressing room. That skill, that experience and it just hasn't worked.

It's been a disappointing day for England. They offered so much hope at the beginning of the day, putting on that opening partnership. There was a small glimmer of hope when Sri Lanka were 23-2, but Samarawickrama came in and hit his first ball for four and you could feel England's hopes dissipate.

Chris Silverwood won't worry too much about beating England. You don't worry too much about who you're playing, you just focus on getting the win.

England aren't actually out, just very nearly out. Their official exit will probably be confirmed over the weekend. There are still more than three weeks to go in this tournament.
