Afghanistan have tried a lot of pace. It won't be too long before they turn to spin, I think.

Afghanistan have a long chat over a possible review after Azmat thumps into Pathum Nissanka's pads, but they wisely say no with Hawk-Eye showing the ball was sliding well down leg.
Azmat has been very miserly, conceding just three runs from his two overs so far, but there have been no real scares for Sri Lanka.

Exquisite placement from Pathum Nissanka. Sri Lanka will be looking for that 270 or 280 mark at least. It looks a good pitch.
Pathum Nissanka is looking in great touch. He opens the face and plays a lovely, delicate cut that beats the man at backward point and races to the third man boundary.
Sub fielder Najibullah Zadran is still out in the middle in place of wicketkeeper Ikram Alikhil, who injured his finger in the first over of the match.
That must be a concern when Afghanistan bat later on.

On their day Afghanistan can beat any side. They have skill but they can be very crafty as well.

There's great energy from the Afghanistan fielders so far. I am sure they will have definitely circled this game on the calendar and thought 'Sri Lanka, Pune, October 30. We can turn them over'.
A couple of singles from Azmat's first over sees Sri Lanka reach 50.
Midway through the over the TV broadcaster decided to show Mohammed Shami's four wickets against England yesterday.
They don't look any better on second watch.

Sri Lanka will be pretty content with where they are after the loss of an early wicket. They are probably the happier of the two sides at the moment. Pathum Nissanka is going to be a key player for him - they will hope he can bat deep.

We haven't seen one Sri Lanka player take a chance yet. They've put the bad ball away, but we haven't seen an overly aggressive stroke from them yet. I suppose they are will be thinking about setting the game up for their experienced middle order.
Naveen-ul-Haq bowls the first over after the powerplay and is punished for a short and wide delivery by Pathum Nissanka, who cuts it powerfully down to third man for four.
There will be some more seam at the other end as Azmatullah Omarzai enters the attack.

Afghanistan would never have chosen to chase in previous eras because they didn't trust their batters. Now they have got batters who can score big runs up front. It used to be a case of get runs on the board and bowl spin, that's how they felt they would be able to get over the line. They are not as one-dimensional as they used to be. They have pace and are backing themselves to chase totals of 270 and 280. It's been a real change of mindset.
I feel your pain, Keith. It is still incredible that England are not even mathematically eliminated yet.
Some belated aggression from Sri Lanka as Pathum Nissanka seizes on a short ball from Fazalhaq Farooqi and pulls away to the rope.
Nissanka has moved on to 24 from 28 deliveries and looks in good touch.
Seven off the over makes the powerplay look a bit better for Sri Lanka, though Afghanistan will probably be the more satisfied.

So, what result in this game will help England qualify? Oh...
Keith
Here is the first wicket to fall as Fazalhaq Farooqi is rewarded for a well-judged review to dismiss Dimuth Karunaratne.

It's a baking hot day and this pitch looks absolutely beautiful. It's a lovely colour. There's no real live grass on it. I think there's been a little bit of seam movement, but not a great deal. You can really trust the bounce when batting.
I don't think Rashid Khan would be a very good poker player as he rarely hides how he his feeling. His face is an absolute picture as Pathum Nissanka punishes a short ball from Mujeeb and cuts through point for four.
Rashid is not the captain but he is central to Afghanistan's decision making.

I did feel this might be a coming-of-age tournament for Afghanistan. They've always had such a good spin bowling attack but now they have pace, the likes of Naveen-ul-Haq, Fazalhaq Farooqi. All of sudden they also have proper batters, too, with players Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran up front.
They have most bases covered for the first time ever at a World Cup.
There is not much competition, but that is the shot of the day so far from Pathum Nissanka as he powers the ball through point for just the second boundary of the innings.
Left-armer Fazalhaq Farooqi goes around the wicket to Kusal Mendis and beats him all ends up with a fine delivery that angles in and then straightens, fizzing past the outside edge.

A good start by Afghanistan having won the toss. It looks a good pitch for batting, but they fancied a chase. They have pretty much been on point so far.
Mujeeb races through another over with just a single coming off it.
Sri Lanka skipper Kusal Mendis said he wanted the side to set the pace after winning the toss, but they have yet to really get going.
Remember a win for either of these sides would lift them up to six points, just two points shy of New Zealand and Australia in third and fourth respectively.
