De Kock is on 19 from 34 and probably feels he needs to start hitting boundaries. He's been so good for South Africa, he just knows how to get hundreds.

Sometimes hundreds come through pure aggression - today is a little different, New Zealand are bowling nicely, they've good fields set, but I don't think he'll be panicking, he'll be looking for boundary options and where he can target.

  2. SA 57-1published at 13 overs

So nearly a very soft dismissal for Quinton de Kock as Mitchell Santner tempts him with a very, very slow, loopy delivery.

De Kock rather lazily pushes at it but the lack of pace means he is through the shot early and chips the ball back towards Santner.

Thankfully for the batter, it falls just short as Santner moved forward for the catch.

Luckily for Matt Henry, he doesn't seem to have been affected but he takes a massive divot, just like Liam Livingstone did here the other day when taking a catch.

  4. SA 53-1published at 12 overs

Singles all the way for South Africa in Tim Southee's latest over.

They're keeping the scoreboard ticking over nicely and, based on how they've approached things in this tournament, will start to up the ante gradually before really going for it in the last 15 overs.

For New Zealand, there is a momentary scare as Matt Henry's knee gets caught in the turf as he dives to make a stop but he seems to be OK.

One wicket for New Zealand so far, Trent Boult took it as Temba Bavuma - after a positive start - edged to slip on the drive...

It's a steady start for South Africa. New Zealand will be happy, asking South Africa to bat first, knowing that's what they are good at. Considering New Zealand stick to their principles and their beliefs on what they are good at, it is no surprise.

  7. SA 47-1published at 11 overs

We're going to see some spin for the first time today as Mitchell Santner comes into the attack.

The South Africa batters are happy to push singles, four of them in the over.

That short ball is a gift. Southee hasn't played any cricket and he is going to be a bit rusty, that was a sign of it.

  9. SA 43-1published at 10 overs

Short ball from Tim Southee and it sits up nicely for Rassie van der Dussen to pull it away for four.

That's the end of the powerplay and both sides will be reasonably happy so far.

De Kock gets a little bit fortunate, giving a chance, albeit a tough one. Phillips was close there to one of the all-time great World Cup catches. Gasps around the ground, it was spectacular.

    SA 39-1

Nearly a stunner from Glenn Phillips at backward point!

Tim Southee, on for his first over of the tournament, offers a hint of width and Quinton de Kock goes after it.

The ball goes a a catchable height but well to the right of Phillips, who throws himself towards it, gets a hand to it but can't hold on.

That would have been an incredible grab.

I wouldn't be surprised if New Zealand turn to spin pretty quickly here.

  13. SA 38-1published at 9 overs

Rassie van der Dussen is in at three for South Africa and he is happy to give himself a bit of time to get set.

Three dot balls end a successful Trent Boult over.

Temba Bavuma will be annoyed, he was playing well.

The Kiwis are good in the field, it's a low one down to Daryl Mitchell's right. Trent Boult, a different angle, it stays low, right in the middle of Mitchell's hand. A good catch. New Zealand needed that breakthrough.

    Edged and gone!

Temba Bavuma was looking good and got on top of Matt Henry but it's a different story up against Trent Boult.

The left-arm seamer angles this one across Bavuma, he goes for the big drive and the ball goes quickly off the edge and straight into the hands of Daryl Mitchell at slip.

Frustration for the Proteas skipper after a good start.

  17. ouch!

    SA 37-0published at 8.1 overs

Nasty short ball from Trent Boult and Quinton de Kock isn't expecting it.

The South Africa left-hander belatedly tries to duck but can't get out of the way and is clocked on the shoulder.

We'll have a brief delay as the physio comes on but De Kock seems OK to continue.

Temba Bavuma is going well and has taken a particular liking to Matt Henry.

Here he is driving the fast bowler over cover for six.

  19. SA 37-0published at 8 overs

    Gorgeous shot from Temba Bavuma!

The right-hander walks at Matt Henry and whips the ball through mid-wicket for four.

That was a very classy shot. Shades of Kevin Pietersen in that one.

You don't mind those as a batters, it's just an easy one on the pads and guided down to a very fine leg.
