This is New Zealand's way, their close chase of Australia will give them confidence they can chase anything. Both captains will have got what they wanted and they will be happy.

A thick outside edge there from De Kock, he just opens the face of the bat ever so slightly and squeezes that for four. It's not been a bad tournament for De Kock, considering he's retiring from 50-over cricket at the end of it.
Quinton de Kock has made a fairly sedate start to this innings but he gets his first boundary with a thick outside edge through point.
The bat turns in his hands as he pushes at a back of a length delivery from Trent Boult but the contact was solid enough to take the ball to the rope/ cushion/ sponge.
South Africa want to bat first, they've been given that opportunity and Temba Bavuma has played some lovely shots early on.
Not least these two drives for four off Matt Henry...

On X, formerly Twitter: "South Africa batting first: 428, 311, 399, 382. South Africa chasing: 207 all out, 271-9. New Zealand: 'We'll have a bowl.'"
De Kock 5, Bavuma 16
After that fantastic shot for six, Temba Bavuma settles in again and it's four dot balls to end the over.
South Africa are being very selective about when they take the aggressive option in these early stages.

What a brilliant piece of timing. A rare show of aggression in these opening overs but goodness me, that was superb timing.
Shot!
Full and wide of off again from Matt Henry, Temba Bavuma hits off side again but this time he goes aerial and sends the ball all the way over cover for six.
Super shot.
It's nothing extravagant but there is a bit of swing for Trent Boult and he has started very well.
He gets through a maiden with a leg bye the only run from the over.
After two tasty drives, Temba Bavuma is then beaten by Matt Henry before defending the last.
Good over from South Africa and Bavuma, in particular, as he tries to find form.

Slightly too full from Matt Henry and if you get the width, it is there to be hit. A great shot from Bavuma.
Lovely shot from Temba Bavuma.
It's a half-volley from Matt Henry and Bavuma drives crisply through the covers for four.
Four more! That's an even better shot because this wasn't a half-volley. Hit on the up, right out of the middle and it races away through the same region.
Very tidy stuff from Trent Boult throughout the over, again just a pair of singles from it.
For all South Africa have wowed with their big hitting in this tournament, the openers have often given themselves time to get set before the fireworks start.
Today is no different. The first part at least.

Boult is going up for it, the umpire says no and captain Latham behind the stumps is not interested.
Big appeal from Trent Boult as the ball flicks something on its way through to Tom Latham.
Latham isn't interested, though, and the replays show why.
There was no bat involved as the ball went past the inside edge and off the back thigh.
Too high for lbw as well.

Normally going crash, bang, wallop does not really work, but for South Africa at this World Cup it has, with all of their players hitting form at the same time.
Matt Henry gets Temba Bavuma to fish at one just outside off early in the over.
It's a good start from the New Zealand seamer with just a pair of singles from the over.
It's left-armer to left-hander to start as Trent Boult bowls to Quinton de Kock and the latter is happy to have a look early on.
He gets the first runs of the day with a firm push down the ground, flicked back just before the boundary sponge and they are back for two.
A good stop from a diving Glenn Phillips at backward point last ball ensures those are the only runs of the first over.

If I was New Zealand, I would have batted first.
South Africa, while they lost against Australia, would have taken some confidence in their ability to chase, given how close they get to chasing Australia last time out.
