That's a really unorthodox but effective shot. It's exactly what I want to see from a tailender, I love it.

  2. NZ 119-8published at 28 overs

    Target 358

Trent Boult is going to try and have some fun here. A bit of a shorter ball from Jansen pops up and with a baseball swing back down past the bowler, Boult gets plenty behind Jansen's delivery and sends it for four.

Seven runs come from the over, six of which from Boult.

  3. Postpublished at 15:04 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November 2023

Marco Jansen has so far taken three wickets, moving him joint-top for most wickets at this World Cup. This was the most recent of those, removing Tim Southee on seven.

  4. NZ 112-8published at 27 overs

    Target 358

Interestingly, there is a change of bails prior to the final ball of Maharaj's over. Not from a player (or Stuart Broad), but from one of the umpires.

Marco Jansen continues at the other end and it looks like Matt Henry is padded up to bat. How much he can do though is another question completely.

He likes that, he's roaring with delight! Maharaj strikes again.

  6. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 26.4 overs

    Neesham b Maharaj 0 (NZ 110-8) Target 358

Sensational bowling from Maharaj. He has three.

That is a stunning delivery, it has turned an absolute mile and Neesham's innings comes to an end after eight balls without getting off the mark.

Matt Henry is not expected to bat after suffering a hamstring injury while bowling earlier. Trent Boult comes out to bat and South Africa could be one wicket away from victory.

  7. NZ 109-7published at 26 overs

    Target 358

Jansen gets that wicket-maiden and sits on figures of 3-20 from his six overs so far.

At the other end, Maharaj continues, sitting on 2-11 off his four overs so far.

  8. Not outpublished at 25.4 overs

    Target 358

Hardly a surprise, Neesham survives with the impact being outside the line.

Jansen is on for a wicket-maiden though, with two more deliveries to come.

  9. South Africa reviewpublished at 25.4 overs

    Target 358

Temba Bavuma takes it upstairs, but the review feels rather optimistic. For lbw against Neesham, but it looks like it is missing the stumps and potentially, going over.

  10. NZ 109-7published at 25.2 overs

    Target 358

No hat-trick for Jansen, but he has again proved his quality at this World Cup today. Sensational bowling from him so far.

Marco Jansen has taken 16 wickets in the tournament. He joins Adam Zampa and Shaheen Shah Afridi at the top of the tournament list.

  12. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 25.1 overs

Southee lbw Jansen 7 (NZ 109-7) Target 358

Crashing into middle and leg stump, that is plumb and New Zealand are seven down.

It felt like an optimistic review that was out of hope more than anything else. Southee departs and Jimmy Neesham makes his way out to the middle.

Marco Jansen has again been superb with the ball and is on a hat-trick.

That looked as out as out can be. Unless he got bat on it I can't see what's saving him here.

  14. Umpire reviewpublished at 25.1 overs

That could be that for Tim Southee. He's trapped on the pads by Jansen and given out, but New Zealand opt to take it upstairs.

  15. NZ 109-6published at 25 overs

    Target 358

Maharaj rattles through this over and just three singles are scored from it.

At halfway, New Zealand require 259 runs off these remaining 25 overs to win, with more than 10 runs an over being required already.

A massive ask, and it almost feels like an impossible one.

Bar chasing, if South Africa have had a weakness in this tournament it's their death bowling. Wickets seven to ten have scored more against them than any other team in this tournament.

  17. NZ 106-6published at 24 overs

    Target 358

Ngidi's over ends with a single from Southee, keeping him on strike to face fellow bowler Maharaj at the start of the next over.

With the ball, South Africa's only glaring weakness at this World Cup has been taking wickets at the tail. There is plenty of time to do it today, but it is in their interest to get the job done fast.

  18. NZ 105-6published at 23.5 overs

    Target 358

Southee gets himself off the mark. A bit of a hack at that delivery from Ngidi and there is just enough on the shot to get it through Van der Dussen on the deep mid-wicket boundary for four.

A bit of a tired effort from Van der Dussen in the field. You can hardly blame him though, considering how well he batted and more importantly, how long for.

This has been a particularly disappointing performance from New Zealand as they've had the better of South Africa in World Cups - they've beaten them six out of eight times.

  20. NZ 100-6published at 23 overs

    Target 358

Maharaj's over ends with two dots. Five runs come from it, but more importantly, Santner's time out in the middle is over.

Interestingly, Tim Southee is out to bat next as opposed to Jimmy Neesham, who only looked ready to come out and bat after Southee had already got out into the middle.
