  1. NZ 88-4published at 17.1 overs

    Target 358

    Top shot!

Full, wide of off stump and Glenn Phillips laces it through extra cover for four.

Is this the start of a New Zealand counter-attack?

Pakistan, when there is controversy and a little bit of chaos, are very good. The World Cup needs this fourth vs fifth place quarter-final if you like. We thought the top four were settled earlier in this tournament.

  3. NZ 84-4published at 17 overs

    Target 358

Very expensive over from Gerald Coetzee as Daryl Mitchell takes him for back-to-back boundaries after those five wides.

The first is thumped back past the bowler and the next is timed nicely through mid-wicket.

A timely boost for New Zealand.

That's a horrible wide, bounced into the pitch and Coetzee gives away five runs.

  5. NZ 74-4published at 16.2 overs

    Target 358

Five wides after Gerald Coetzee gets a bouncer completely wrong!

Far too short and the ball balloons over the batter, over the wicketkeeper and away to the fence.

I don't think New Zealand took into account what South Africa's bowling attack can do, they are quality. That is where sometimes data of grounds can be misleading.

  7. NZ 69-4published at 16 overs

    Target 358

Is that a drop? No, just short of slip.

Kagiso Rabada squares up Daryl Mitchell and finds the outside edge but the ball is wide of the diving Quinton de Kock and bounces just short of slip.

Very close. That really would have been curtains for New Zealand.

These South Africa quicks are relentless, it's a proper four-man attack. I'm not too sure chasing against this South Africa side were the best to choose to chase.

New Zealand have lost their fourth wicket, lost their skipper and after a brilliant start to this World Cup, New Zealand are in danger of opening the door to Pakistan.

  10. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 15.2 overs

    Latham c Maharaj b Rabada 4 (NZ 67-4)

That wasn't part of the New Zealand plan, they're unravelling here.

It's a leading edge from Tom Latham as he tries to work the ball to leg.

The ball loops up gently to Keshav Maharaj and Kagiso Rabada has a thoroughly deserved wicket.

  11. How's stat?!published at 14:07 Greenwich Mean Time 1 November 2023

    Phil Long
    BBC Test Match Special statistician

New Zealand are currently 67-3, at this stage, South Africa were 61-1 but they have a plan.

At the start of this innings, New Zealand needed 7.16 runs per over to chase this target of 358, with that rate now jumping up to 8.31 an over.

    NZ 67-3

The players are taking drinks. South Africa will be very happy with their first 15 overs.

New Zealand just have to hold their nerve and keep the required rate manageable then who knows what they can do in the last 10-15 overs?

  13. NZ 67-3published at 15 overs

    Target 358

Three singles from Gerald Coetzee's latest.

New Zealand are still very much in rebuild mode. They can't afford to lose another wicket anytime soon.

It's back to those classic elements of one-day cricket: build a partnership and keep wickets in hand for late in the innings.

New Zealand know what they are doing, they're going to be calm and they will not rush anything.

  15. NZ 64-3published at 14 overs

    Target 358

Given the way the batters are going, the South Africa bowlers have not been given quite so much attention but they've done a very good job so far.

Kagiso Rabada has 10 wickets already at this World Cup and gets through another fine over that costs only a pair of singles.

That required rate keeps going up for New Zealand.

If New Zealand lost today, it's not the end of the world as they can win one of their remaining games. However, if they lose today, given their injury concerns Pakistan could beat them.

  17. NZ 62-3published at 13 overs

    Target 358

Daryl Mitchell is a good man to be out there for New Zealand in this situation and he gets them moving again with a pull shot for four.

He doesn't time it by any means but there was enough force behind it that the ball beat Temba Bavuma in the race to the fence.

Gerald Coetzee is quick, Marco Jansen is also getting through at a decent lick today. South Africa have got some great pace. I've enjoyed watching Coetzee, he's not someone I knew much about before this World Cup.
