  1. dropped catch

Kohli dropped on 10published at 5.1 overs

    Ind 25-1

Another!! This would have been a speccy but still another genuine chance.

Kohli chips one back towards Chameera, who is in his follow-through which is always tough because you're off balance.

It's also one-handed which is even tougher. It's in, then out, then almost in again before he spills it as he hits the ground.

Against this kind of team, you have to take those kinds of opportunities.

  3. dropped catch

Gill dropped on 8published at 5 overs

    Ind 25-1

Oh, no. There have been a few near misses but this was genuine, and while it was quite tough, they've got to be taken against a team like India.

Gill drives in the air and a leaping Charith Asalanka gets two hands to it at backward point but it bursts through his hands.

How costly could that be? An expensive over from Madushanka.

That's remarkable, it's not even a bad ball. It's just a perfect prod.

  5. Ind 23-1published at 4.3 overs

    Pressure eased.

Too short from Madushanka and Shubman Gill crunches it away for four.

Gill follows it with some pure timing, dabbing the ball for four through the covers. Remarkable.

Another close chance to get Kohli in Chameera's first over. Agonising for Sri Lanka.

Chameera has bowled 11 balls now and it has been as good of an 11 balls as you will see. You see it in Tests, you get a bit of pace, a bit of bounce. This is feeling like an absolute belter.

  8. Ind 14-1published at 4 overs

Edged... but dropped short! It's all going India's way.

Chameera draws a genuine edge from Kohli but it ricochets from bat on to his back leg, which takes the pace off and means it doesn't carry to the keeper.

He's hit two boundaries but it's been a tentative start from the India great.

Another maiden from Chameera, who has started beautifully.

    A beauty from Madushanka, this.

  10. Ind 14-1published at 3 overs

Madushanka recovers well, just two more runs coming from the over. The sound every single time Virat Kohli hits the ball - even if he doesn't score - is always astonishing.

  11. Ind 12-1published at 2.2 overs

Dealing in boundaries at the moment.

Madushanka drifts down the leg side again and Virat Kohli is not missing out on that. Cue another roar from the crowd.

Shubman Gill is the No.2 ranked batter in ODI cricket, but he has not had a great World Cup so far. He has posted scores of 16, 53, 26 and 9 so far, missing India's first two games due to fever. He is due a big score.

  13. Ind 8-1published at 2 overs

Lovely start from Dushmantha Chameera - a maiden to Shubman Gill.

Sri Lanka need to take a couple more wickets to keep India really under pressure, though. Their batting line-up has barely been challenged.

  14. How's stat?!published at 08:38 Greenwich Mean Time 2 November 2023

Dilshan Madushanka has averaged 1.6 degrees of swing in the first 10 overs of this World Cup so far. Only Australia's Mitchell Starc (1.9) has more.

History repeating itself in the World Cup at the Wankhede Stadium. Here earlier in the World Cup, Quinton de Kock scored four off the first ball and got out in the second. Rohit Sharma has done the same today.

That day against England, South Africa ended on 399.

  16. Ind 8-1published at 1 over

Mumbai erupts as Virat Kohli clips the last ball of the over for four.

He played the same shot earlier in the over with the ball landing just in front of the fielder of short fine leg, which drew a few gasps from the crowd.

An expensive first over but a priceless wicket.

Sharma's feet are stuck in super glue. There's not a lot of movement in the ball, he's just missed it.

Madushanka has been outstanding in this World Cup and that may be the best of them all.

    Rohit b Madushanka 4 (Ind 4-1)

Silence! Rohit is cleaned up by a beauty!

Full, straight, a hint of swing and the stumps are splattered. The crowd is stunned, that is how rare a Rohit Sharma failure is in this tournament.

Just what Sri Lanka needed having chosen to bowl first on a belter of a pitch.

Silence quickly turns to excitement though, as Virat Kohli strides to the middle just three balls in.

It's a stinking hot day and it is sticky. I think Sri Lanka will really struggle here.
