Afghanistan were actually four overs ahead of the rate. We need more teams to field four spinners.

The Netherlands have limped to 179. But we should acknowledge how well the Afghanistan bowlers have bowled. They had a loose start, but they regrouped after Rashid Khan came back on the pitch.

  3. Afghanistan need 180 to winpublished at 11:43 Greenwich Mean Time 3 November 2023

That is a fine effort from Afghanistan, who have given themselves a great chance to seal a fourth win of the tournament to keep their semi-final hopes very much alive.

Netherlands were actually in a decent position at 73-1, but folded in the face of Afghanistan spin plus some sloppy running between the wickets.

Very disappointing for the Netherlands, who were going at seven an over at one stage.

Van Meekeren lbw b Nabi 4 (Ned 179)

    Yep. Hitting middle and leg.

Paul van Meekeren departs for four and Netherlands are all out for 179.

They're going to review it because they might as well, but that one looked pretty close.

  7. Netherlands reviewpublished at 46.3 overs

Paul van Meekeren is given out lbw missing a sweep-shot - but instantly reviews because, why not.

This looks very, very out though.

  8. Ned 178-9published at 46 overs

Afghanistan are desperately trying to snare this final Netherlands wicket. Wicketkeeper Ikram Alikhil appeals for a possible under-edge by Paul van Meekeren, but the umpire turns down his appeal.

Just the one run from wide in the over though, so it is not proving to costly for Afghanistan.

The Dutch are trying to get as many runs as possible, but I don't think it will be enough. It looks a very good surface to bat on.

  10. Ned 177-9published at 45 overs

Aryan Dutt skies a couple of shots that land safely and Netherlands try to scramble what they can.

Three runs off the over in total from Mohammad Nabi, who has another lbw appeal turned down. That looked a bit more optimistic than his previous ones.

Here is the dismissal of Roelof van der Merwe a few moments ago. Netherlands will probably be relieved it was not another run out at least.

We need Noor and Nabi to both bowl out to beat the record for overs of spin in World Cup history - it currently stands at 39 overs.

  13. Ned 173-9published at 44 overs

Paul van Meekeren is looking to sweep Noor Ahmad at every opportunity to try and negate the spin.

He misses a reverse-sweep and the ball hits his back pad but Noor's lbw appeals are turned down.

It looked a half-decent shout, but Afghanistan have already burned both their reviews.

  14. Ned 172-9published at 43 overs

Paul van Meekeren looks much more comfortable facing Mujeeb as a nicely played sweep around the corner is clawed back just before the rope for two runs.

Netherlands will take anything they can get at the moment.

I can't express how inadequate Van Meekeren is looking facing Noor Ahmad.

  16. Ned 169-9published at 42 overs

So close to another wicket for Noor as he gets one to grip and turn away from number 11 Paul van Meekeren and the ball flashes past the outside edge.

Van Meekeren, somehow, survives the rest of the over.

The Netherlands are really struggling. Roloef van der Merwe was going aerial, but completely sliced it. A very good catch, those are never easy.

  18. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 41.1 overs

Van der Merwe c Ibrahim b Noor 11 (Ned 169-9)

    In the air and out.

Roelof van der Merwe goes for the slog-sweep but can only top-edge the ball into the sky and Ibrahim Zadran takes a smart catch at mid-wicket.

  19. Ned 168-8published at 41 overs

Mujeeb Ur Rahman, likely still frustrated after that lbw shout was turned down in his last over, races through another six deliveries at the cost of just a single.

    Thanks, Ffion.

The Netherlands are in a bit of hole. Batting out the 50 overs would be a good effort from here.
