  1. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 4.1 overs

    Mendis c Ravindra b Boult 6 (SL 30-2)

    Trent Boult strikes!

Kusal Mendis' poor World Cup continues. He tries to follow Perera's intent, flashing at a wide-ish delivery, but the thick outside edge flies down to Rachin Ravindra at deep third to take a simple catch.

An unnecessary shot after the good over that preceded it.

It's getting lively out there for both teams, some aggression showed from Sri Lanka after losing that early wicket. There will be chances for New Zealand, they just have to take them.

  3. SL 30-1published at 4 overs

Four more! A streaky edge past a diving slip and Southee can't believe it.

Sri Lanka are not letting the early wicket hold them back.

  4. 6 runs

    SL 26-1published at 3.5 overs

Hello! That dropped catch seems to have woken Kusal Perera up a bit.

He thumps Tim Southee down the ground for four, chipping just over mid-on, before nailing the next one for six!

Both a little risky against the swinging ball but good to see some intent from the opener.

    Vintage Tim Southee, this one.

  6. SL 15-1published at 3 overs

Trent Boult, on the other hand, has not been at his best.

His first ball is wide and slashed over point for four by Kusal Perera, followed by a couple of wides, before Kusal Mendis dabs one down to deep third for four more.

A profitable over for Sri Lanka after that early wicket.

For some reason, I think Sri Lanka have had a pretty decent tournament, but that might be because of beating England. Really, it has been average, with the ball and with the bat. They had a good win against England and put up a decent fight against South Africa, scoring 350 when chasing 420 odd.

  8. SL 3-1published at 2 overs

The captain Kusal Mendis, who has had a tough time with Sri Lanka this World Cup, is in early once again and defends his first ball solidly.

Latham makes no mistake this time. Nissanka has looked scratchy in this World Cup.

That catch will be a big relief.

  10. wicket

    WICKETpublished at 1.5 overs

    Nissanka c Latham b Southee 2 (SL 3-1)

And Tom Latham breathes a sigh of relief!

It's not the man he dropped previously, but he makes no mistake this time as Southee draws another edge from Pathum Nissanka and Latham gratefully gobbles it.

The perfect start for New Zealand and Southee, who looks back to his best after missing the start of the tournament through injury.

Tom Latham knows that at this level, he has to take that.

  12. dropped catch

Perera dropped on 0published at 1.4 overs

    SL 3-0

    Oh, Tom Latham!

The keeper puts down the simplest of chances as Kusal Perera edges behind off Tim Southee.

The batters scramble a single and Southee can't believe it, turning on his heels and trudges back to his mark.

  13. SL 1-0published at 1 over

Nissanka drives nicely, but it's well intercepted by the flying Glenn Phillips (who else?) at backward point and restricted to just a single.

Tidy start from Boult, no alarms for Sri Lanka so far.

  14. SL 0-0published at 0.1 overs

Full, straight and solidly defended by Pathum Nissanka.

Last time I watched Sri Lanka, they didn't have a good day either as they were bowled out for 55. Hopefully I'm not a bad luck charm today.

I had the pleasure (?) of watching New Zealand's last outing against Pakistan which started at five in the morning last Saturday.

They piled up 401 but still lost as their bowling attack was absolutely destroyed by Fakhar Zaman's 63-ball century. They've been boosted by the return of Lockie Ferguson, though, and will be hoping for a much better start with the ball today.

Trent Boult will take the first over.

There was a fair bit of drama the last time that Sri Lanka played, so they'll be hoping for a calmer affair today.

They are already eliminated from the World Cup but still have Champions Trophy qualification to play for, with the top eight qualifying alongside hosts Pakistan.

  17. 'It is a very important game'published at 08:26 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2023

Sri Lanka captain Kusal Mendis: "We were looking to bowl first I think. Unfortuantely, we lost the toss. I think it's about trying not to worry, if we can get a good total and play good cricket, that can be enough.

How important is the game in terms of the Champions Trophy?: "Of course, it is a very important game today. I think if we play our basic levels of cricket and stick to our basic plans, I think it can be enough today.

Will today's game be less stressful for you?: "I think New Zealand are also a very calm team, I think there's no pressure. Our team is getting better after the last game.

Confidence in that your best performance was here against England?: "Yes, of course. We played very good cricket against England and we bowled very well. Today, it is about the batters doing their job very well. Hopefully they can do that.

Team news?: "One change. Kasun Rajitha is out, Chamika Karunaratne does play."

  19. 'There's a few unknowns to this surface'published at 08:20 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2023

New Zealand captain Kane Williamson: "We're going to have a bowl first today. There's a little bit of weather around and there are a few unknowns to the surface so we're just trying to make use of it first up. It's usually a pretty good one here.

A quarter-final and a day to play to the pressure?: "Yes, throughout the focus has been about how we've wanted to play. We've won a few, lost a few, but on the whole, the focus has been on the performances and hopefully, we can put on a performance today.

Concerns after four straight losses?: "There's so many factors, some really close ones that could've gone either way. That's the beauty of tournament sport, you play different teams at different venues at different times.

What is the team news?: "Lockie Ferguson comes in for Ish Sodhi.

Is that a reaction to your last result or specific to this game?: "Much more specific to today. We wanted to focus on us, what we wanted to do and what is in front of us."

  20. New Zealand win the toss and bowlpublished at 08:18 Greenwich Mean Time 9 November 2023

Kane Williamson, back to his best with a classy 95 in New Zealand's last outing against Pakistan, chooses to bowl first on a humid day in Bengaluaru.

It looks a good pitch but there might be some rain around at some point. The rain worked against them in that last game as well, with Pakistan winning on DLS, so that might've helped his decision.
