The first 10 overs belonged to opener Kusal Perera.

You never quite know whether Sri Lanka's batting is going to be brilliant or bewildering, and Perera provided a bit of both.

He was dropped by Latham on 0, watched the rest of the top order collapse in front of him but continued to launch a 22-ball half-century including nine fours and two sixes.

New Zealand fast bowler Trent Boult: "100% happy, we got some good work done. That's half the job done, we'll look to go out and be positive.

Is there anything in the pitch for the bowlers?: "There's a bit for the spinners, it's a little bit slower than we thought. We finished the innings off slowly, but we'll be looking to get this done quick.

Have you as a team learned a lot in this tournament?: "As a collective, the boys have done really well. We've had a couple of of hard losses, but the focus is on tonight."

In fairness, at 70-5 after the first 10 overs, I didn't see Sri Lanka making it to the 47th over, so their last two wickets battling hard for 58 runs is admirable.

But a win for New Zealand takes them closer to the semi-finals and with Pakistan and Afghanistan lurking behind them, they'll probably be looking to get these 172 runs pretty quickly to make sure they are even further ahead on net run-rate.

That's the end for Sri Lanka's resistance.

That's one Sri Lanka are not going to even bother to review. They are in all sorts of bother.

And the fun comes to an end!

Rachin Ravindra produces a beauty to turn and bounce, taking Madushanka's outside edge and ending the stubborn resistance of a last-wicket stand worth 43.

The last two wickets dug in but the loss of early wickets was Sri Lanka's downfall.

New Zealand need 172 to win.

The runs are coming slowly but confidently.

What Sri Lanka are doing here is giving Pakistan, Afghanistan a sniff of a chance.

As a specialist number 11 myself, I do admire a good last-wicket stand.

You know you're just frustrating the fielding side, who have been out there for hours and just want to sit down and eat. A couple of boundaries just adds to that fun.

Fair play to these two, they have batted brilliantly.

This last wicket partnership has lasted 13 overs. Who would have thought!

A lovely bit of turn and bounce from Ravindra beats the outside edge, just one of a number of close calls that this batting pair has had.

Into the last five overs. Hopefully we'll see them play a few shots now.

    Hopefully.

Just the one over for Glenn Phillips, as Tim Southee returns.

It's so annoying when you take your first nine wickets relatively easily and then the number 11 comes in and makes batting look relatively easy, even if it's not exactly swashbuckling.

It's still probably not going to be a score that will trouble New Zealand, though.

At this point in the game, it looks like New Zealand will be out there for the whole 50 overs. We wouldn't have thought that at 10 overs when Sri Lanka were five down.

    Sri Lanka don't look troubled.

Well, at least the spinners are on so the overs are going quickly. Ravindra gets through his latest, just one run from it, probably just seeing it as a warm-up for when he has to bat in a short while.

You often think as a tailender you are better than you are. The bowler will toss one up and you think, I could hit that.

Here's Glenn Phillips, a bit of a golden arm for New Zealand during this World Cup.

His first over goes for three as Madushanka and Theekshana continue to dig in. It'll be pretty remarkable if they manage to bat their 50 overs here.

We saw seven wickets fall in the first 20 overs and just two since then.

Madushanka with a cross-batted heave. It lacked elegance but is highly effective.

  17. SL 159-9published at 41 overs

There's nothing more frustrating as a bowler than a stubborn ninth-wicket stand, especially when it's almost Test-match style and going nowhere.

It's handy for Sri Lanka, though.

Number 11 Dilshan Madushanka swings across the line and slogs Tim Southee for four over mid-wicket, just adding to his annoyance.

There is nothing more satisfying as a fast bowler, when you get someone. But Ferguson did go over and check that he is okay.

    Cheers, Jonty.

There's a bit of a break in play as Theekshana gets some treatment on his arm. That was one that would make you wince even from the comfort of your own sofa. Properly whacked into the bone on his wrist.

  20. SL 155-9published at 40 overs

Two runs come from the final over Ferguson's spell and in the final ball, his shorter ball hits Theekshana in the arm. That looked like a sore one.

While he gets a bit of attention from the physios, I shall hand you back to Ffion Wynne to take you through the rest of this innings.
