  1. SA 5-0published at 1 over

    Target 245

A solid start from the South African openers.

Yesterday, New Zealand's Rachin Ravindra overtook Quinton de Kock as the tournament's leading run-scorer.

Can he reclaim his place at the top? He is only 15 runs behind at the moment.

  2. SA 4-0published at 0.2 overs

    Hello!

Quinton de Kock watchfully defends the first ball before threading the second through the covers for four with a flourish.

The openers stride to the middle, followed by Afghanistan who are all full of smiles.

They have got four quality spinners in their line-up so it will be a different approach to South Africa's pace-heavy attack.

And it'll be spin first. Mujeeb Ur Rahman will take the first over.

South Africa have, of course, already made the semi-finals so this result isn't hugely important for them.

But everyone knows their weaknesses with chasing - just one win coming that way so far in the tournament and a shock defeat by the Netherlands.

So if they can get over the line here, it'll give them a big boost mentally going into the crunch game against Australia next week.

Temba Bavuma was really struggling in the field though, so it'll be interesting to see how he approaches his innings when he opens with Quinton de Kock, who has been in the form of his life.

But from number five, Azmatullah Omarzai rescued his side with a patient, composed knock of 97.

He was left agonisingly short of his century after failing to get the three runs he needed from the final two balls of the innings, but he played brilliantly to give Afghanistan's masterful bowlers something to work with.

South Africa then fought back and took three quick wickets, Afghanistan slipping from 41-0 to 45-3 and then to 116-6.

Lungi Ngidi took two wickets but struggled when he came back on later, spinner Keshav Maharaj was excellent for 2-25 but Gerald Coetzee was the pick of the bowlers with an ODI best of 4-44.

Afghanistan's World Cup run may be coming to an end - they needed to win today by more than 300 runs to overtake New Zealand's net run-rate - but they've had a very positive campaign.

Renowned for their bowling usually, their batting line-up has really stood up throughout and Gurbaz and Zadran started positively again today, adding 41 for the first wicket.

At 116-6, it didn't look like Afghanistan would get anything close to 244 so they can be very pleased with that batting effort.

Azmatullah top-scored with 97, but they will be frustrated that many of their other batters failed to kick on after making a solid start.

South Africa bowled well but will be frustrated that they let such a promising position slip away. Knowing their struggles with chasing, this will be a big test for them but perhaps the one that they need before going into the semi-finals when it matters most.

The last three balls were disappointing, but shouldn't take away from an amazing knock. I'm just gutted for him that he couldn't get over the line and get three figures - hundreds mean so much.

Azmat cannot believe it! He bends down, gets a pat a back from Naveen. He just couldn't manufacture anything from that final over.

Naveen run out 2 (Afg 244)

Agony! Azmatullah can't get the runs needed from the final ball of the innings and is left stranded on 97. He looks gutted.

Naveen sets off for the run anyway and is run out by Kagiso Rabada fielding off his own bowling.

After a fantastic innings from Azmatullah, South Africa need 245 to win.

    Another dot ball!

Whether he gets to three figures or not, it has been a fantastic innings.

  14. Afg 244-9published at 49.4 overs

Naveen gets the single, and then Azmatullah defends back to the bowler.

Two balls to go, three runs needed for his century.

  15. Afg 243-9published at 49.2 overs

    Just the single!

Azmatullah moves to 97 and again, it's over to you, Naveen.

  16. Afg 241-9published at 49.1 overs

    And he gets the single.

Bizarre from South Africa, spreading the field and allowing him the run far too easily.

It means Naveen is on strike for the first ball of the over. Surely Azmat should have taken the single there?

  18. Afg 240-9published at 49 overs

15 from another poor Lungi Ngidi over.

They run two off the last ball and that means Azmatullah will be at the non-striker's end for the final over, on 96!

    Over to you, Naveen.

  19. Afg 235-9published at 48.3 overs

Can't tell if Lungi Ngidi is struggling with his injury here or just bowling really badly.

His first ball went for six and he's bowled three wides since. Quinton de Kock behind the stumps is finding it quite difficult to hide his frustration.

    Afg 232-9published at 48.1 overs

    How?!

Lungi Ngidi executes his wide yorker but Azmatullah somehow gets down on one knee and nails it over long-on.

    Azmatuallah moves to 90...
