Astonishing that people are calling for Buttler to go! Can't help but feel sorry for him having to follow one of the great white-ball captains of all time in Eoin Morgan. Few people have had such a good cricket brain. Give Jos time to rebuild this new team. Form is temporary and all that!

  2. 'Brook should play for England in every game in every format'published at 17:30 Greenwich Mean Time 3 December 2023

Sir Alastair Cook on TNT Sports: "It was important for Harry Brook to give himself some time before he kicked on and we saw those big shots come out.

"He will be disappointed to fall short of the century but for me, he has got to play every game for England in all formats. He is a special, special talent and he can play all around the ground off both pace and spin.

"The run out was his own fault, but these things happen. He is still young and he is still learning. But nothing seems to faze him, he is very calm and we have seem him read situations very well but still play with remarkable skill."

Jos Buttler looked like he was carrying the world on his shoulders during that troubled World Cup campaign so finishing as England's lowest scorer today will do little to boost his confidence.

Steering the team to victory will help though. And his team are in a very strong position at the halfway stage.

Chris: How on earth is Jos Buttler in this England team, let alone leading it. Woeful in the World Cup, even worse here, in a year when he has offered nothing. England struggling yet again, this time against a team that couldn’t even qualify for the World Cup.

Peter: I fear for Buttler he can't go on like this - something's got to give. Surely a rest would help?

England's Harry Brook on TNT Sports: "I had to give myself a bit more time today than I usually would but that's something I've been trying to work on anyway, so it was pleasing.

"The pitch was tricky, the bounce was definitely variable and it was tough going through the middle at times.

"We've been practising on some tricky, turning pitches in training so that has helped us. We didn't know what it would be like here, so we had to stick well to our game plan.

"It's our first outing after a poor World Cup but it's nice to be back together and we've got a decent total on the board.

"It's going to be about mixing it up with the ball and keep plugging away and hopefully we'll do well."

325 feels around 50 too many for the West Indies. Enterprising and positive stuff all down the order, after a terrific start from England’s new opening combo. Harry Brook held the middle overs together but that 8th wicket partnership between Sam Curran and Brydon Carse is what’s given England their dominant position. Everyone in double figures except the no.11 and….Buttler.

  7. How's stat?!published at 17:12 Greenwich Mean Time 3 December 2023

England's total of 325 is the highest in ODIs at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, beating Australia's 322-6 against the West Indies in 2007.

England are all out with the final ball of the innings.

Gus Atkinson goes for another big hit but can only top-edge the ball and sub fielder Roston Chase takes the catch.

England all out for 325, meaning West Indies need 326 to win.

Stand and deliver from No.11 Gus Atkinson.

He hammers his first delivery wide of mid-off for four.

Is he gunning for a promotion?

    Six and out!

Rehan Ahmed looks to repeat the trick but can only top-edge the ball into the air and Oshane Thomas holds on to the catch.

  11. Eng 321-8published at 49.2 overs

    That is remarkable.

Oshane Thomas bowls a full toss to Rehan Ahmed who somehow powers the ball back over his head for six!

I think he was aiming over long-on but sent the ball dead straight.

  12. Eng 313-8published at 49 overs

Brydon Carse and Rehan Ahmed scramble five runs plus a wide in the penultimate over. Carse is one run away from equalling his highest ODI score.

Cariah has done really well to get out of that over conceding just eight, especially after Curran’s six off the first ball. Good use of the wrist spinner’s variations.

Young Rehan Ahmed is the next batter. He has some shots in his locker so this could be fun.

Eight runs off Yannic Cariah's final over, finishing with figures of 1-76.

Super cameo from Curran comes to an end.

His own fault - it was Carse’s call. He was running to the danger end and if he’d set off immediately, he might have made it.

Curran run out (Joseph) 38 (Eng 305-8)

    More chaos.

Sam Curran goes for another huge heave but can only slice it straight to the fielder at short third.

Brydon Carse was already committed to the run though and by the time Curran realised and set off he was run out way short of his ground.

He departs for a more than useful 38 from 26 balls.

    And there we go.

Yannic Cariah's first delivery is clobbered back over his head for six by Sam Curran to bring up the England 300.

The West Indies look a bit deflated. They had managed to tie England down but this late flurry from Sam Curran and Brydon Carse - worth 60 from 36 balls so far - may have taken the game away from them.

This is brilliant stuff from Curran and Carse. The value of genuine all-rounders batting so low. A brutal but also very clever 50 partnership.
