That's it from us on day one of this Test. England have work to do if they're going to get back into it with India well in control.

Scroll down for reaction from the India camp and to read how it all played out.

We'll be back from 03:45 GMT on Friday morning for day two.

  2. 'An amazing feeling'published at 11:47 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2023

India batter Satheesh Shubha, speaking on TNT Sports: "I'm very happy to be here, it's an amazing feeling and I'm really out of words.

"To contribute on debut was fantastic."

On partnership with Jemimah Rodrigues: "We've batted together in U19s so it didn't feel much different. We had a good partnership.

"Maybe a little bit disappointed [not to go on to score a century] but still happy with the score."

  3. 'We would take this any time'published at 11:45 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2023

India batter Jemimah Rodrigues, speaking on TNT Sports: "This a very good score, to end the day with 400 on the board plus the way everyone contributed.

"Nobody got a hundred but we had many 100-run partnerships and that speaks about what a team effort looks like.

"I would have loved to have finished with three figures but if you give us this day on debut, I think we would take this any time.

"We're 100% learning and hopefully make a bigger one next time.

"The plan is to bat the same way because we're going at four-plus runs and over. Take it as much as possible so our bowlers have a cushion to come out there and take wickets to put pressure back on England."

As they did in the summer, England looked to attack all day which has meant India's run-rate has always been high.

    It's certainly a good pitch.

England will have to take advantage when they do come to bat.

England struck twice early, first through Lauren Bell and then Kate Cross, at which stage India were 47-2.

India, though, have stuck at it all of the way through and made this a long day for the bowlers.

Shubha Satheesh was very impressive on debut with her 69. Jemimah Rodrigues also made 68, Yastika Bhatia 66 and Deepti Sharma an important 60 not out.

Bhatia was dropped on 15. Had Lauren Bell taken that catch could have been different.

India were also 313-6 before a stand of 92 between Deepti and Sneh Rana.

England do have Pooja Vastrakar on strike here. Six balls to go in the day...

Deepti Sharma plonks forward in defence and then looks to the dressing room. The thing is there's still 50 seconds left on the clock.

Sophie Ecclestone is going to come on to bowl the last although England need to get all of the protective fielding equipment on too.

The India players are all sat on the sidelines in their training kit and look very content with their day's work. There have been four players get half-centuries, plus a 49 and a few further contributions. It has been a team effort.

It is also India's highest total at home in Tests.

It's looking like this over may be the last. England are not in a rush.

    Ah.

England would love one more in these closing moments but instead Lauren Filer serves up a wide full toss. Pooja Vastrakar just hangs her bat out there and the ball flashes away for four.

"A bit early for a Christmas present," says Daggers on the TV comms. Quite.

That partnership between Deepti Sharma and Sneh Rana was worth 92. It has probably decided who won this first day.

Pooja Vastrakar is India's number nine with seven minutes to go in the day.

A much-needed boost late in the day for England as Sneh Rana plays around a straight ball from Nat Sciver-Brunt.

The bails light up and England's all-rounder throws her arms up in the air in a celebration full of relief and weariness.

A ripple of applause from this small crowd and a punch of the gloves between the two batters marks India reaching the 400 mark.

Deepti Sharma then adds yet another boundary with a flappy pull to a Lauren Filer bouncer. India's run-rate has remained excellent all day.

As Matthew says, it’ll have been exhausting for England today. These players are brilliant athletes, but they simply aren’t used to 100 overs in the field.

It’s the equivalent of asking a runner whose event is the 800m to perform at the same rate in a 10k.

Nat Sciver-Brunt continues and gets through a steady over.

We're heading towards the end of a gruelling day in the field for England so no surprise that Heather Knight is sticking with the freshest of her bowlers late on.

The TV director is flicking between the England fielders, adding to the feeling that there are some tired bodies.

Kate Cross said on No Balls this week that the England players had been preparing for this match by standing on their feet for eight hours during the day.

It's not easy to get the body ready for this.
