  1. dropped catch

Mandhana dropped on 5published at 2 overs

Almost a wicket the very next ball as Mandhana tries to swipe Bell off her length but gets a top edge.

The ball loops agonisingly into the air, over the head of Tammy Beaumont at short leg, and Beaumont is trying to find the ball up above her.

Her vision is obscured by the peak of her helmet and she cannot get there despite a dive.

  2. Ind 5-0published at 1.1 overs

Lauren Bell shares the new ball and her first delivery is loopy and very full.

Left-hander Smriti Mandhana drives elegantly for four.

  3. Ind 1-0published at 1 over

The first ball does little to warm the hearts of the quicks as it threatens to go under the bat. Kate Cross could have been bowling with a shot putt there was so little bounce.

There's an optimistic appeal for lbw later in the over and Cross is already puffing a bit in the heat by the sixth ball.

    We're under way...

    Right then.

Kate Cross has the new red ball in hand. She didn't play in the T20s.

The India openers are, as ever, Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma...

It's a much more peaceful rendition of the India national anthem than the last time I heard it, at the men's World Cup final sung by 100,000 in Ahmedabad.

There aren't many in the house yet. We'll see if it fills up.

India have three Test debutants in their team - Renuka Thakur, Jemimah Rodrigues and Satheesh Shubha - but look relaxed.

We're at the DY Patil in Navi Mumbai for this one - just a short hop across the border from the Wankhede where the white-ball matches took place.

The pitch looks a belter although Charles Daggers Dagnall, who is out in India, tells us it may do a bit early on for the bowlers.

  8. India win the toss and batpublished at 03:50 Greenwich Mean Time 14 December 2023

What I can tell you is India have won the toss and have decided to have a bat.

Given we were a world when Donald Trump was just a reality TV star and businessman the last time there was a Test in India, there is little data to go on to tell you whether that's right.

England have plumped for Sophia Dunkley as Tammy Beaumont's opening partner. They have also gone for the extra bowling option with seamers Lauren Bell and Lauren Filer joining Kate Cross in the pace attack.

It may be cold and dark back home but more than 4,000 miles away we're set for a tantalising and exciting few days in the Indian sun.

England are in town for the first women's Test in India for nine years. It's England's first Test in the country since 2005.

What will happen? Who knows. That's all part of the fun...
