The India players have just broken from their huddle by the boundary edge to loud cheers from this decent crowd.

It's not full but there are plenty in.

Joe Root needs 12 more runs to break the record for most runs scored against India.

The average score by visiting teams in India at lunch on day one in the last 10 Tests is 74-3.

The stats suggest England are doing OK.

I can't speak for all of those previous surfaces but this pitch is turning already too.

Here's a stat from our friends at CricViz...

108-3 is the highest score at the end of the first session by a visiting team batting first in India since Australia managed 131-1 at Dharamsala in March 2017.

Normally after a mini collapse on the first morning of a test I'd have a little smile knowing that my moans about a lack of first class preparation were vindicated. Here I still find myself trusting in Stokes and McCullum. Bazball eh?

Ashwin celebrates wicketImage source, Getty Images

A fascinating start to this series, that's what.

England actually made a very good start against the pace of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, reaching 41-0 after eight overs with a lot of attacking intent.

Then the spinners came on, the ball ragged, England lost three wickets for five runs in 21 balls and things felt awfully familiar.

Ben Duckett got one from Ravichandran Ashwin skidded on to hit his pad - the tech had the ball clipping the top of leg stump, a jittery Ollie Pope edged to slip for one and Zak Crawley drove Ashwin into the hands of mid-off.

At that stage it was panic stations, every ball looking like getting a wicket, but Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow have smartly taken England to lunch on 108-3.

If you're just waking up, ready for the commute or the school run, you've missed some cracking cricket.

But I'll let the wonderful Matthew Henry take you through a recap, as I go for another much-needed coffee.

    Enjoy!

Excellent partnership from Root and Bairstow at a good tempo as well. They have looked to rotate strike and put the bad balls away. Jonny Bairstow has been looking to play a lot off the back foot to the left-arm spinners.

England will be quite happy after losing the three quick wickets.

A superb session of cricket, with honours just about even. Duckett looked good and was perhaps a bit unlucky with his decision, before which Rohit looked rattled. England could have fallen apart, but Root and Bairstow have played 'normal' cricket with good intent. Well worth getting up early for.

The Yorkshiremen safely steer England to lunch.

A fine partnership of 48 has dug them out of real trouble after three wickets fell for just five runs.

Crawley and Duckett's aggressive opening stand of 55 laid the platform, but it has been calm and steady from Root and Bairstow to end an enthralling opening session.

  17. Eng 106-3published at 27.1 overs

Edged... but four! Jonny Bairstow is playing with fire here, constantly going back in his crease and playing the ball late off the stumps.

He manages to edge this one safely past slip before giving his helmet a little bash to reinstate his concentration.

Axar Patel, sporting a jazzy pair of wide-rimmed orange sunglasses, twirls his way through another probing over that concedes just two.
