Rohit Sharma toys with the idea of a review, but I'm not entirely sure what for. It's a beauty from Axar Patel that turns sharply and slices Jonny Bairstow in half, but he just about jams his bat down in time.

Bairstow responds with a back-foot cut, riskily played off middle stump, but it brings him four more. Axar can't believe he's got away with another of those.

  2. Eng 95-3published at 24 overs

Ashwin is prepared to play the long game here. He's playing with Root's patience, but both he and Bairstow aren't biting yet.

    It's bubbling nicely before lunch.

  3. Eng 93-3published at 23 overs

Joe Root calmly steering England out of a pickle.

Yep, life is back to normal.

Don't forget that this was Jonny Bairstow's home ground in the IPL for quite some time. He's practically a local and has been giving out restaurant recommendations to the press. There is a theory that if Brook had been here, Bairstow would have been the one to miss out to accommodate Foakes. Now he has the chance to lock himself in, possibly all the way to a 100th cap in the fifth Test.

  5. Eng 92-3published at 22 overs

Oh, Kevin. That's not making my 3am alarm and the rain and wind outside any easier to deal with.

But Jonny Bairstow slams a full toss from Ashwin down the ground for four, so that makes up for it ever so slightly.

Classic Joe Root. He makes the sweep shot look so easy, whipping Axar Patel away for a valuable boundary.

Things always seem so much better when he's at the crease.

20 overs in and we're introduced to the circle-ball-fitter thing. Have we got an official name for it yet?

Either way, India aren't happy and we've got yet another delay to get a new one.

  9. Eng 80-3published at 20 overs

Root and Bairstow take four from the over with minimal risk. England's experienced duo have calmed things down since the chaos that unfolded earlier.

Genuinely, I don’t think 200 is a bad score on this surface. This isn’t a vintage Indian batting line-up and we’ve picked the right attack for the conditions. Good fun this!

Jadeja is doing his best to improve India's over rate here as another six balls flash past.

As fun as it was watching Crawley and Duckett dominate early on, this is the most enthralling passage of play we've had.

Joe Root is a masterful player of spin, while there are early signs that Jonny Bairstow is at his swaggering, confident best. Combine that with India's spinners working their magic, hopefully we're in for a treat.

Time seems to come to a standstill as Joe Root gets a top edge off a sweep, before it eventually lands safely in front of fine leg.

Jonny Bairstow is then beaten outside the off stump, the keeper ambitiously whipping off the bails.

I suspect England would love the seamers to make a return soon. And I suspect we won't see them for a long, long while.

    Oh, Jonny.

He gets his first boundary with a lovely cut shot as Jadeja offers some width, before playing the same shot from a much straighter one with the same result.

There are gasps from India's fielders as he gets into such a risky position, but he gets away with it.

11 runs from the over to ease some of the pressure that was bubbling.

Is anyone really surprised? Lyon showed in the first two Tests of the Ashes just how unprepared England are for spin. Now they’re in the toughest place to play spin anywhere in the world and falling apart. Bazball yet again proving it can’t beat either one of the top two sides in the world.

  17. Eng 61-3published at 16 overs

Jonny Bairstow dabs a single to get off the mark as England's Yorkshire pair reunite once more to try and dig them out of trouble.

There can't be many harder situations than this, in terms of starting a Test innings. Three quick wickets fallen, Ashwin and Jadeja twirling away in tandem, a raucous crowd behind them.

    What a spectacle.

England are in all sorts now from a position of strength, having lost three quick wickets. That's what playing in India is all about.

It was a good low catch from Siraj.

Zak Crawley tries to put the pressure back on the bowler, hitting down the ground. It is one of his strengths but he can only pick out Siraj, who takes a smart catch low to the ground.

    The pressure is on.
