It takes Ben Duckett just five balls to get the reverse sweep out.

He only gets a single but it gets the message across. The ultimate competitor that is Ravichandran Ashwin won't mind that one bit.

  3. Eng 41-0published at 9 overs

    Yep, it's going to spin.

Zak Crawley misses a sweep, misses two cuts and then his defence is beaten by a beauty that turns past the bat.

    A maiden. The contest begins.

Jadeja coming on and it will be interesting to see how the ball reacts to the left-arm spinner. Will England still take the positive option or have a look?

  5. Eng 41-0published at 8.1 overs

    Here we go!

First look at spin. Ravindra Jadeja has ball in hand.

    Ben Duckett sweeps incoming.

    Oh, hello!

Ben Duckett cuts another short ball for four before ending the over with yet another stunning straight drive down the ground. Literally nobody on the pitch moved.

Watching cricket so early with a full house of family sleeping is a different experience. Gentle, under my breath ‘oohs.’ I can hear the wind rustling outside, and my chair creaking. The kettle boiling is a calculated risk that it may wake the kids- ‘what are you doing, dad’ they would ask…

Another quiet, testing Jasprit Bumrah over. The ball is coming on to the bat quite nicely, despite the occasional beauty that he will inevitably provide.

There's still the Ashwin, Jadeja and Axar challenge to come, of course. That'll be fascinating.

Great shot to finish from Duckett a tricky over - played and missed at five, smashed the last one for four.

Mohammed Siraj is all over Ben Duckett for the first four balls of the over. He prods and misses tentatively, still refusing to leave anything.

But Siraj then gifts him an extra delivery from a front foot no-ball and Duckett gratefully whacks it through the covers.

    Lovely.

Some rather contrasting breakfast ideas from our readers this morning...

Just one run from a probing Jasprit Bumrah over, serving England a timely reminder that it won't always be that easy.

Just in case anyone had any doubts, Bazball is alive and well.

Handsome shots by Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett, making the most of the bowling before the spinners come on.

Ben Duckett is keeping up his tradition of completely refusing to leave the ball.

After a few prods and miscues against the class of Bumrah, he gets a hint of width to slash past point for four before unveiling a picture-perfect drive down the ground for the same result.

    Spin soon?

So, so much made of the Hyderabad pitch. Rahul Dravid said "it may turn," which could be code for a snake pit.

One thing to note. Those bare, dry patches are of a very full length, arguably too full to make much of an impact early in the match. It's when the rest of the pitch dries out that we could have some fun.

Mohammed Siraj corrects himself with four beauties to beat Crawley's bat. The first two were too straight, but he finds a good length and a hint of swing to put the England opener back in his place.

  20. Eng 9-0published at 1.2 overs

Blimey, Mike, those are pretty strong breakfast options for 4am. Putting my cereal to shame.

Meanwhile, Zak Crawley starts Mohammed Siraj's over with two thumping boundaries. The first is clipped through mid-wicket, the second a glorious straight drive.

So much for a calm start.
