How on earth has that missed?

Four byes are added to England's total as Ashwin gets one to rip through Pope's defence, bounce just over the top of the stumps and the keeper had no chance.

Ben Foakes responds with a perfectly executed sweep for four, fetching the ball from outside off stump. Nice.

To answer Nick (09:29), there is no 2:40 at Kempton today; first race is 16:55 (I will be going there this evening), and my up would be Desert Doctor.

    A maiden.

Whatever the headlines say after this match, England have played pretty well. Pope's playing beautifully after a horrid first knock and all the batsmen have shown they're capable of having a good tour. The spinners now have a match in them, they'll have learnt a lot, and with a balanced bowling attack we can certainly win Tests here.

Jadeja is into his 16th over. Suspect he'll keep going for a while yet, given the turn and bounce he is getting.

He does give away a run via a no-ball, though. Criminal from a spinner.

Ollie Pope moves to 83. He has been mightily impressive.

Jasprit Bumrah throws in a yorker to Pope but is yet to create the theatre of earlier in this spell. Pope and Foakes are running well. A single is nabbed at the end of the over.

People complaining about the selection - glad you predicted the amount of reverse when professionals thought it unlikely. Be interested to hear your views on the 2:40 at Kempton.

Ashwin is having a bit of a mare in the field here. It's never boring with him!

Pope clips into the leg side again, and both Ashwin and sub-fielder Rajat Patidar are in pursuit. But instead of making his life easier with the company, they both leave it for one another and it gifts Pope four more.

Precious runs for England, though Ravi Jadeja looks far from impressed. Behind those sunglasses hides a fierce glare.

And he starts with a maiden. Just getting warmed up, it seems.

    Jasprit Bumrah is back.

    Deep breaths.

A nudge down to fine leg from Pope, followed by a leg bye off Foakes, takes England into the lead!

I mean, it's by one run, but we'll take it.

So India will bat again. I'm sure many didn't see it getting to that stage.

Ollie Pope gives himself a little nudge on the helmet and twirls his bat to refocus himself. He was back to being scratchy in that over.

    Oh, miles outside the line.

Add that to the collection of silly reviews we've had over the past two and a half days.

There is no bat. But is it outside the line?

Just as I'm singing Ollie Pope's praises, he has a bit of a stinker to Axar Patel.

He nearly edges onto his stumps, then just about digs one out that keeps very low, before skipping down the pitch and an inside edge saves him from an lbw scare.

Or does it? Rohit Sharma wants a look.

I hope Baz and Ben acknowledge they got the selection wrong for this Test match and change things for the next game. I fear that they will double down as is their wont and with their mantra of "go harder" will drop Wood for Shoaib Bashir and go in with an all-spin attack.

Another lovely shot from Foakes, who has got to keep looking to score in the same manner as Pope. He drives through the covers for three, and Ashwin gets a big cheer when he retrieves it safely this time.

He's always a good sport though, and gives a grin.

Four more! And some comedy cricket to get it.

Ollie Pope whips one past mid-on where Ashwin gives chase. He gets there, puts in the dive to slide alongside the ball but somehow his hand misses, and he's still sliding along the turf while desperately scrambling for the ball as it reaches the ropes.

Meanwhile, Ravi Jadeja is still getting plenty of fizz and turn. He's looking like the biggest threat right now.

England are giving this a really good go. Australia lost their first Test in India by an innings, being bowled out for 91, so I am happy we didn’t capitulate like that. We will grow into this series. I am looking forward to it.
