The players are taking a drink.

India need 100 more runs. England need three more wickets.

Remember it's Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj to come after these two. They average seven and four respectively...

Those bouncing symbols are known my way as the dots of joy, or the dots of doom. It all depends on what news they bring.

  3. Ind 131-7published at 47 overs

    Need 100 runs to win

Remember India have only lost three Tests at home in the past 10 years. A remarkable record.

The crowd has been largely kept quiet in the last couple of hours but Ravichandran Ashwin cuts for four and the locals erupt with noise.

Ashwin scored a century against England in 2021 remember. It's not done yet.

Stokes is making numerous changes to the bowling like a T20 game, rather than longer spells in Test cricket. Always trying to make something happen. Modern-day bowlers are probably more accepting of this than previous generations. I thought Hartley would be left on auto-pilot at one end!

  5. Ind 125-7published at 46 overs

    Need 106 runs to win

It was a little over a year ago I was sat in this very seat live-texting England's dramatic win in Rawalpindi.

That one was good but, given everything, I'm starting to think this would be even better - if it can be pulled off.

There's no wicket for Root on his return as KS Bharat tries a hack out of the rough.

Does anyone else see those bouncing symbols indicating something is being written and get really excited or tense, wondering what is coming?

Ben Stokes' last bowling change was a masterstroke...

"Any idea of the weather forecast tomorrow?" says Sunil Gavaskar on TV. How things change.

There isn't any rain forecast, just to put that idea beyond doubt.

Ashwin and Bharat are defending well enough but the scoreboard is not really moving. England will feel comfortable a wicked ball will come.

Under pressure more often than not one tends to take the safer option to avoid criticism and that’s where you need to be brave as a unit and back each other.

That’s been the difference between these two teams so far.

  10. Ind 122-7published at 44 overs

    Bharat 2, Ashwin 1

I'm worried about Tom Hartley's balding patches in the sun but I imagine it's the last thing on his mind.

"Great bowling, Tommy Boy," chirps Ben Foakes behind the stumps as the left-arm debutant tweaks away.

    Ravichandran Ashwin looks calm.

England have absolute clarity and backing from their camp and continuity in selection - look at comments relating to Crawley, Duckett etc.

Not often you hear Indian TV commentators reflecting on how England’s batsmen have shown the way to play in these conditions.

  13. Ind 121-7published at 43 overs

    Need 110 runs to win

There are 21 overs left in the day. Play can go until 11:30 GMT but if we get there and either side is close to the finish line the umpires could extend beyond that.

Basically just plug yourself in until lunchtime.

Remember India have never lost a home Test after taking a first-innings lead of more than 100 runs. In this one it was 190.

    It would be historic.

  17. England reviewpublished at 41.4 overs

    It's all going on.

Ashwin misses a sweep, Ben Foakes takes it and he goes up straight away. Ollie Pope at short leg likes it, too.

    England review immediately.

    Ashwin shakes his head...

People might wonder how this can happen given England scored 420 on the same pitch but it's about mentality and playing to strengths. England have the underdog tag and played with total freedom as the game looked lost.

The last innings is the business end of the game and India are probably still a bit surprised to be in this position.

  20. Ind 120-7published at 41 overs

    Target 231

The difference in approach has been startling.

India have been tentative, no intent, just hoping that defence will get them through. But it's cost them, and England have pounced.

Ravichandran Ashwin is a handy lower-order batter, and India's hopes rest on him and KS Bharat here.
