What a moment for the youngster. Getting the Indian captain as your first Test wicket. Doesn’t get much better.

Lovely start for Bashir. Rohit will be kicking himself. Lazy stroke on such a flat pitch. Missed opportunity for the Indian captain.

Shoaib Bashir has his first Test wicket!

What a moment! Rohit Sharma was very watchful - he faced 41 balls and didn't hit a boundary. And his dismissal is just as tame, turning the ball off his hips and straight into the hands of Ollie Pope who was waiting at leg slip.

Lovely field placing from Stokes, lovely execution from the debutant and a huge breakthrough.

These are the kind of tracks where the toss really counts double - India will be looking for a huge total here and to bat long! Great opportunity to see what these young spinners can really do... also, no. Just a cup of tea for me!

    A maiden.

They're going to bat for two days, aren't they?

Ben Stokes is setting more thoughtful fields for his young spinners than in the first innings at Hyderabad. He's got the sweepers out for loose deliveries.

  9. drinks break

    Ind 40-0published at 16 overs

Another tidy over from Bashir goes for just a single as Jaiswal continues to dig in, rather uncharacteristically.

Time for a drink. Could do with a coffee myself.

  10. Ind 39-0published at 15 overs

Rohit Sharma drives nicely towards mid-off, the timing so good it looks set for the boundary until Jimmy Anderson pulls off a tumbling dive to restrict it to a single.

Many thanks to Rehan Ahmed and Shoaib Bashir for making me feel horrendously old this morning, as if a 3am alarm on a Friday wasn't painful enough.

Seriously, though - Anderson's longevity is astonishing, right?

Notable shift in approach from Stokes, too. He allows Bashir a couple of sweepers on the boundary for protection, happy for the opening pair to take singles - something which Tom Hartley didn't have last week.

Jaiswal beats the man on the off-side though, crashing four past point, but it's otherwise another tidy over from Bashir.

  13. Ind 32-0published at 13 overs

I'm with you on that one, Dave. Couldn't possibly eat that early in the morning.

And when I do, it'll be a bowl of cereal. Who has the energy to make a bacon sandwich at 4am?

Meanwhile, Jaiswal carves Joe Root's first ball of the over for four, but blocks out the rest.

Lot of chat last Test about all the different breakfasts being eaten at 4am. Nobody wakes up at 3.55 and has brekkie?! Of those watching in the UK thumbs up had breakfast, thumbs down not eaten. Feel a massive win for the non-eaters coming on.

  15. Ind 28-0published at 12 overs

A lovely start from the debutant, just one from the over.

Jaiswal whacked Hartley around in his first spell in Hyderabad but he goes for the more casual approach this morning, much to Bashir's relief.

  16. 'Stokes & McCullum will have faith in Bashir'published at 04:45 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February

    Sir Alastair Cook
Former England captain on the BBC Test Match Special podcast

It will be interesting to see how Shoaib Bashir goes. I’ve heard some very good reports from training in the United Arab Emirates and I think there’s some videos of him bowling some absolutely cracking balls.

It is a big ask for any 20-year-old to come in and play but you trust Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum’s judgement.

They’ve got a lot of decisions right with picking players and if they didn’t think he was right for it then they wouldn’t be selecting him.

They must be thinking with the balance of side they can go with that they can cover and hide him enough if they need to but when they want to throw him the ball they are confident he will be good enough.

It's wide, Jaiswal tucks in, but it's safely pouched at point and there's no run.

    And breathe.

That's the first time I've ever heard of that story or heard that clip. How good!

No alarms - or dogs - in Hartley's first over.

Now, you might remember this ground as the place where a dog invaded the pitch during England's last visit in 2016. The naughty pooch even caused an early tea to be taken. You can listen to the TMS commentary clip here.

I've seen a couple of other potential invaders skulking around this morning. Eyes peeled.
