The lesser-spotted 90 overs in a day milestone!

I like this late-in-the-day aggression from India.

Srikar Bharat slog sweeps Bashir into the stands.

Fair point, Peter. It's been a very promising display, with 2-92 so far. Considering that he's been bowling to a lad on 177 not out, too - not bad at all.

Not sure I've seen enough praise for Bashir today. What a quietly composed debut, so good to see exciting English spin on show.

Playing it safe until the close?

Nah. KS Bharat whacks a short ball from Rehan Ahmed for four, followed by some good running before Jaiswal whacks the last ball of the over straight back over the bowler's head for six.

16 from the over. That'll do.

Anyone else licking their lips at our batters on this pitch? It feels like our batters would probably be near 400! This Test will revolve around England being able to put scoreboard pressure on India's 2nd innings!

  7. Ind 307-5published at 88 overs

Wicketkeeper KS Bharat gets off the mark with an aggressive sweep for four off Bashir.

    Rate that.

  8. Ind 302-5published at 87 overs

England have bowled very well, helped by Stokes' attacking fields as ever, but they haven't had to do anything massively different to get the five wickets.

India have been poor, Jaiswal aside (obviously).

Win the toss on a flat pitch, home conditions, inexperienced opposing bowling attack (Anderson aside, obviously) - and five batters make it to double figures but don't get past 40. Criminal.

I'm lying in bed with Covid (urgh), attempting to sleep, and yet both of the last two times I've woken myself up to check the score we've taken a wicket within two balls! Better get back to sleep again and wake myself up in 5 minutes...

In Hyderabad, a few India batters threw their wickets away with needless shots of frustration and Rahul Dravid spoke about needing to improve their discipline here.

Based on some of the wickets that have fallen, I suspect he'll have steam coming out of his ears by the end of the day.

Extra bounce from Shoaib Bashir and that does for Axar Patel, who was playing an uncontrolled cut.

    Axar c Ahmed b Bashir 27 (Ind 301-5)

Soft, soft dismissal. Axar Patel gifts England a wicket late in the day!

It's short and wide from Shoaib Bashir, asking to be hit for four. Axar looks to cash in, but is deceived by the extra bounce and whacks it straight to Rehan Ahmed at point instead!

He waits at the crease for an age before eventually dragging himself off. He was looking very composed, and he's thrown it away.

    A Rehan Ahmed maiden.

For once, we're actually going to get the allocated overs in! What a treat!

I can't but help feel that going at a little more than three an over on a flat pitch which is at its best right now, has been too defensive by the Indian batsmen.

And on that note, another fifty partnership comes up. That's the third today, while Shubman Gill also added 49 for the second wicket with Jaiswal.

The opener takes a single, and the crowd simmers as India reach the 300 mark.

  17. Ind 297-4published at 83 overs

That's better. Jaiswal and Axar tick the singles off Rehan Ahmed to restore some calm.

Jaiswal has built partnerships with everyone today but nobody has stuck around with him long-term. That'll frustrate India coach Rahul Dravid.

Wonderful knock from Yashasvi Jaiswal so far.

"He can't be tired he's only batted 235 deliveries," I can hear Sir Geoffrey saying.

  19. Ind 292-4published at 82 overs

There's a brief pause in play as Yashasvi Jaiswal calls for a drink, having only taken one 15 minutes ago. Although in fairness, it appears that Ben Foakes went off for something too.

He may want to call for another drink to reset his mind, though. Jaiswal takes an almighty heave from nowhere, a shot like nothing else we've seen from him today. Foakes whips off the bails but his foot has gone nowhere.

Concentrate. He'd be fuming to throw it away with a shot like that.

Rehan Ahmed is mixing his line to the left-handers, some at the stumps but sometimes throwing it wide to see if he can make something happen from the footmarks.
