    Rehan Ahmed breaks the resistance!

He has bowled a tidy spell and gets his reward with the wicket of Rajat Patidar. It's a little fortunate - the ball rolling back on to the stumps after the batter plays a solid defensive shot, but it's a deserved wicket.

It's a huge partnership to break because England are into a weakened middle to lower order now.

I can’t help but think maybe another seamer to support Jimmy Anderson wouldn't have hurt.

  3. Ind 249-3published at 71 overs

Jimmy Anderson unveils all the tricks once more in another testing maiden to Jaiswal, who refuses to take the bait outside off stump.

Sub-fielder Ollie Robinson brings him out a drink, sporting hair the same colour as his bib.

Not a bad set from Rehan Ahmed but he must keep his variations straighter on line with the stumps as this will give him more margin if he errs with length.

  5. Ind 249-3published at 70 overs

Rehan Ahmed recovers from his Jaiswal-inspired hammering in his previous over to concede just four singles.

Patidar is playing a handy supporting role for the opener here. It's a big responsibility given India's depleted batting line-up.

Even at 41 James Anderson is setting the tone after tea with an array of subtle variations. He's switching between reverse swing and cutters at the moment.

  7. Ind 245-3published at 69 overs

High praise indeed! It certainly was spectacular.

Promising signs for England and Anderson as he finds some reverse swing, bowling another miserly over as Rajat Patidar's patience continues to be tested.

We saw Jasprit Bumrah deliver an exhibition in reverse swing last week but Anderson hasn't quite got the same menace as yet.

Got to say…Jaiswal’s six over extra cover against Rehan’s spin from round the wicket is one of the greatest shots I’ve seen!

Classic batting from Jaiswal, quick feet down the wicket to hit Rehan over mid-off then cutting the short ball for four.

He is picking the length and moving quickly into position.

Shot of the day. Yashasvi Jaiswal skips down the pitch with a supreme air of confidence and lofts Rehan Ahmed over long-off for six.

And follows it with a ferociously-timed cut for four!

Even Ben Stokes can only nod his head in appreciation. The kid can play.

  11. Ind 234-3published at 67 overs

Yep, this start after tea suggests India really are going to make England work hard out there. Jaiswal and Patidar are prepared for the grind.

The buzzer rings around the ground to signal that Jimmy Anderson has bowled a no-ball. It brings the crowd to life a little, probably because it's given them a fright. Makes me jump every time.

65 overs and no extras is highlighting just what a determined bowling performance this is. Plenty more hard work to go I fear

Patidar nudges a couple into the leg side, and that brings up the 50 partnership between himself and the centurion, Jaiswal.

Remember, India are without both Ravi Jadeja and KL Rahul in this Test, so this partnership is crucial without their experience and stability to come.

Rajat Patidar expertly navigates a Jimmy Anderson maiden.

    Steady start after tea.

Day off today, so I like to go full Hobbit. First breakfast is before the school run and is a healthy and wholesome granola with blueberries. This is swiftly followed with second breakfast of jam & toast, after navigating the streets of Birmingham with my daughter (she’s learning to drive, I’m learning to pray). Looking forward to elevensies.

Just two singles off Rehan Ahmed's first over after tea as Jaiswal and Patidar settle back in.

The debutant has looked pretty settled so far, with 26 to his name. He's now got James Anderson to contend with for the first time.

England won the first session, marginally, while India comfortably take the second. So based on that, we're in for a cracker now.

Shreyas Iyer was a bit frantic, constantly torn between attack and defence and looked like he was trying a bit too hard at times. He was unluckily caught behind off a Tom Hartley delivery that kept very low for day one, with some help from Ben Foakes' miracle-working hands.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, though, has been superb. He's fast becoming one of my new favourites. He's batted at a steady tempo and pounced on the bad ball, including reaching his century with a six and delivering an epic celebration.

    Thanks, Callum.

Those of you who followed us during the first Test will know how strongly we here in the BBC cricket team feel about hash browns. So we're sending our best wishes to Alex while he copes with this devastation.

Anyway, let's have a quick recap on the cricket so far before the players come back out.

Our social guy Alex has just had his heart broken by a lack of hash browns in his local shop.

Do I want or need more breakfast after my slice of toast earlier? More toast? Or do I be a daredevil and have chocolate spread on it?

Big decisions. I'll leave you with Ffion Wynne while I go and consider it.
