Ben Foakes then got in on the action with a brilliant low catch off the inside edge to dismiss debutant Rajat Patidar.

It was the second tough catch that Foakes has taken off the inside edge/bottom edge in this Test and the Surrey man is proving the worth of having a specialist gloveman behind the stumps.

Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer shared 81 for the third wicket and were threatening to take the game completely away from England.

Ben Stokes was perhaps guilty of giving them too many easy singles and a way into their innings, but then did something incredible to break the partnership.

He brought himself at long-off and the long-on fielder into mid-off and mid-on and that tempted Shreyas into the big shot.

He didn't time it and Stokes hurtled off and took a super diving catch over his shoulder.

Further encouraging signs that his troublesome left knee, which was operated on after November's 50-over World Cup, is fully on the mend.

Shubman Gill has had a fair bit of fortune in his unbeaten 60.

He was given out lbw to Tom Hartley but survived after a faint nick on review. The 24-year-old took some time to review though, so it didn't feel like he knew he'd hit it.

England then opted to review an lbw call off James Anderson, but it was umpire's call on the stumps so Gill survived again.

He also edged Hartley between Joe Root, who was perhaps a little wide at slip, and Ben Foakes.

Gill has got increasingly more fluent as his innings has progressed though and looks in dangerous form for England.

The morning started with James Anderson removing both openers. The 41-year-old really has been brilliant in this Test.

He bowled Rohit Sharma, getting one to move away slightly and knock off stump out of the ground, before Yashasvi Jaiswal edged to slip.

Anderson has moved to 695 Test wickets in this Test and is getting nearer to becoming just the third man to reach 700.

It has been an excellent morning session.

Shubman Gill had a couple of lives but once he settled he's looked fluent.

It is so difficult to separate these two teams, as it has been right through this series. That was another 50:50 session for me.

    Thanks Ffion.

England were very, very good once again in that session. I've seen previous series in India where they have looked devoid of ideas and like they might not take a wicket for hours on end, that definitely isn't the case in this series.

I'll leave you with Callum Matthews to steer you through the interval and what promises to be an exciting afternoon session. Enjoy!

India have dragged themselves back into the game after those two early wickets, where as an England fan you were thinking 'oh, two more wickets'.

It could have been a disastrous morning if the openers got going but they haven't allowed that to happen.

Very entertaining session that has moved the game on.

India’s batting is definitely vulnerable but they remain on course to set a challenging target.

England’s approach in the field is another example of Bazball, which is simply positive thought and attitude at all times.

Well, you've got 40 minutes now for a nap, Sam, because that's lunch.

A very entertaining morning. England started brilliantly, India fought back through Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer, but two wickets late in the session gives Ben Stokes' side a boost going into the break.

India's lead is looking quite ominous already, despite the wickets, but they will still want quite a lot more because as we know, England will try and chase anything.

I love Jonny B, but I think this India series is really going to prove we need to keep Foakes as wicketkeeper. His quality with the gloves will win games.

Good move. With the pressure mounting, Ben Stokes gives Jimmy Anderson an over before the break.

He was all over Shubman Gill earlier.

But Gill and Axar survive it and we'll have time for one more.

Foakes really is a wonderful wicketkeeper. It's criminal how little he has been used by England for a 30 year old. He needs to remain in this team permanently, regardless of who else is fit.

If only Foakes had the gloves during the Ashes, I know I should let it go, but I can't!

With the usual twists and turns of Test cricket, India have gone from complete control to a jitters once again.

Rehan Ahmed tests Axar Patel with a maiden, and we should get a couple more overs in before lunch.

There has been glimpses in this innings of the Shubhman Gill of 2023. He has to make this count for his team and himself. He is not at his fluent best but that’s what Test cricket is all about.

Shubman Gill is crying out for some support. India's vulnerable middle order is exposed again as all-rounder Axar Patel is in at six.

You hardly ever see keepers hang on to those inside-edges standing up to the stumps. Ben Foakes has taken two in three days.

Catching specifically has got England back in the game and they are into the all-rounders now.

It is brilliant from Ben Foakes. He kept his hands low, which is such an important part of keeping in the subcontinent.

    Another!

Rajat Patidar whacked Rehan Ahmed for four earlier in the over but the leg-spinner fights back. It keeps a bit low and Patidar gets a thin edge through to Ben Foakes who, again, makes another very tough chance look very easy.

It's off the inside edge, low to the ground and going very quickly. England have been outstanding in the field.
