  1. Ind 79-2published at 21 overs

    Shoaib Bashir resumes after drinks.

Shreyas Iyer, a diamond earring glinting in his right ear, is using his feet well and running quickly which is encouraging Gill to be more positive, taking the singles even when the boundary option isn't there.

It could have gone even better for England and the last 20 minutes have been slightly worrying because India have scored off the spinners quite easily.

Anderson and Bumrah have taken half of the 22 wickets to fall in this match, which makes you wonder if England are a seamer short. Then again, they are two extraordinary bowlers, albeit in different ways. No disrespect to Mukesh Kumar, but he looks incapable of making the same impact. Maybe England don't need another seamer, just another Anderson.

  4. drinks break

    Ind 75-2published at 20 overs

    Lead by 218

Tom Hartley drifts down the leg side again and Shreyas Iyer easily tickles it for four.

The loose balls are starting to creep in more frequently now as India's improved strike rotation isn't letting the spinners settle.

    Time for a drink.

  5. Ind 69-2published at 19 overs

    Lead by 212

Better from Gill and Shreyas Iyer, as they keep ticking the singles over.

Gill has made starts, and looked good, without being able to kick on in the series so far. He has a huge opportunity today.

Root looked too wide at slip for that Gill edge. Twice in the first innings he was beaten by edges on the outside. I wonder if that affected his positioning this time.

Big opportunity here for Gill to lead India through this mini crisis. He can heap some pressure on England’s inexperienced spinners.

  8. Ind 66-2published at 18 overs

    Lead by 209

Edged again... but past slip for four! It was going way too fast for Joe Root, beaten on the inside as it flies perfectly between him and Ben Foakes.

Gill more convincingly nudges the next ball down to fine leg for four more. India are settling in now.

India will need to set a target in excess of 400 for this England side. Anything under that and it's England's game.

    Lovely.

Shubman Gill thumps Shoaib Bashir straight back down the ground for six to extend India's lead to 200.

    That's more like it.

  11. Ind 48-2published at 16 overs

    Lead by 192

In fairness, coming home from a night out or a house party and putting the cricket straight on would be pretty iconic.

Rather than those getting up early to follow the cricket, can we have a roll call of those trying to stay up from the night before, e.g. the late shift workers, the post-club revellers looking for some wind down time etc) Cheers!

A gorgeous drive from Shubman Gill brings him two, with a tumbling Rehan Ahmed preventing a boundary at long-off.

They're showing a lot more intent against the spin of debutant Shoaib Bashir.

Working the night shift on the Manchester Ship Canal and following the live reporting makes it all worth it. Come on Jimmy.

India have to keep positive and hit some boundaries. They can’t allow England to seize the initiative and bat themselves into a hole.

  16. Ind 42-2published at 14 overs

    Lead by 185

Just imagine the contrast in how England would bat with a lead of 185. They're chaotic enough when that's their deficit.

Surely Jimmy Anderson's name is one of the first to come to mind as the greatest English sportsman of all time, and certainly discussed in the same conversation as Sir Don Bradman and Sachin Tendulkar when discussing cricket's greatest.

The one time Shubman Gill times the ball nicely, Ben Stokes leaps Superman-esque at mid-off to deprive him of a boundary.

  20. Ind 39-2published at 12.3 overs

    Edged... but short of slip.

    Anderson is all over this.
