If Foakes and Hartley get the lead below 100 I think the Indian’s heads will drop. Look how they batted in their 2nd innings, very defensive. Bazball has got into their psyche.

If this dips below 100, India will start to sweat. Foakes is so good at marshaling the lower order, wouldn't be anywhere near this game without his keeping yesterday either, must play. Shoe-in.

  2. Eng 270-7published at 63.1 overs

A very, very useful fifty partnership from 63 balls between Tom Hartley and Ben Foakes.

    They couldn't... could they?

  3. Eng 268-7published at 63 overs

    Weird. Nothing comes of that.

    Let's carry on, shall we?

Wait. They checked the lbw shout on where it hit Hartley's arm, and it was given umpire's call.

So because it was given out on the field - albeit for caught - I think India are asking if the lbw decision can be given as out.

  5. Not outpublished at 62.5 overs

Yep, Hartley's bat hits the ground and the ball comes off his arm. He survives.

It looks like it has grazed Hartley's arm, as opposed to the glove. Ashwin might be waiting even longer.

  7. England reviewpublished at 62.5 overs

    Big moment.

Tom Hartley is given out caught. Ashwin and the crowd celebrate at the prospect of number 500.

But the England batter sends it upstairs...

Tattz: Very much looking forward to a career-making 100 from Hartley to win the game, see him promoted to bat up the order, and then smash all known batting records for the next 10 years. Well, if Steve Smith can do it....

  9. Eng 261-7published at 62 overs

    Target 399

Tom Hartley edges unconvincingly just short of slip, and it flies away for four more.

Whisper it... but this partnership is ticking along very nicely indeed.

    Target 399

Ben Stokes looks as calm as ever on the balcony, the bucket hat as his choice of accessory.

I think that even though England will probably lose this one that India won't be able to relax even if they set a target that traditionally would have been deemed a sure bet in the coming Tests.

Tom Hartley cuts Kuldeep Yadav for four.

There's a long way to go but he really looks like he could be a very handy lower order batter for England, now and in the future.

  13. Eng 247-7published at 59 overs

    Target 399

Genuinely not sure how Ashwin hasn't got his 500th here. He gets one to turn sharply past Ben Foakes' bat and has the India fielders gasping at how on earth it missed the off stump.

Hartley looks like he is going to bring a lot of fun to the lower order! Gives me in-control Broad vibes...

    Eng 245-7published at 58 overs

    Target 399

A quieter over, just three singles from it, to take us to drinks.

If these two can get the deficit to below 100, will India start to get jittery?

  16. Eng 242-7published at 57 overs

    Target 399

    Lofted straight drive for four!

Tom Hartley is going to counter-attack.

Oh, he's absolutely middled it. As you were.

  18. Postpublished at 07:36 Greenwich Mean Time 5 February

Hartley goes back in his crease to cut. I think it may be bat first.

  19. India reviewpublished at 56.1 overs

Is this Test wicket number 500 for Ashwin?

He thinks he has Hartley lbw.

  20. 6 runs

    Eng 238-7published at 56 overs

Ben Foakes joins the party with a stunning slog sweep!
