Sorry, but that was lazy running from Stokes. Just ambled until he realised he was in trouble. Throw was good but would have been irrelevant if he'd showed urgency.

That's absolutely unforgiveable from Ben Stokes. Multiple times that innings he was half asleep. Stopped Foakes 4 with his foot, doesn't realise an easy run is on after ball hits stumps and then he jogs a single to get run out.

Well, we know how Tom Hartley is going to approach things! He's not going to let Ashwin get his 500th Test wicket easily - that sails over mid-wicket for six.

India have been favourites for the entirety of the past two days but they are only now playing like a team that believes it.

There is noise, buzz, men around the bat and full of confidence.

It doesn't stop Ben Foakes, though. He drives beautifully through the covers for four.

That is a superb piece of fielding by Shreyas Iyer. Now is not the time to run out your skipper! It is a bit unlucky for England but run outs are never good.

Tom Hartley joins Ben Foakes in the middle. He's played some handy cameos during the series so far and proved his capabilities as a batter but this is a very different kettle of fish.

There was a hint of hesitation as Ben Foakes set off and that puts you off at the non-striker's end. That stutter leaves Ben Stokes a couple of inches short.

Stokes run out Iyer 11 (Eng 220-7)

    A hammer blow.

Ben Foakes prods into the leg side, there's a teeny bit of hesitation between both batters and Shreyas Iyer swoops from square leg, picks up one handed and throws in one movement for a direct hit.

Stokes is an inch short, no dive, and you feel that is the game gone for England.

    Oh, dear.

A run out? Has Shreyas Iyer worked his magic in the field?

I'm with you on that one, Andrew. We're all here for the silliness.

Why am I still feeling hope, just because a man called Stokes is in the middle. This is so silly.

This is a total change in tempo. Ben Stokes usually starts like this, and it is in complete contrast to all of those who have been and gone.

Here's Ravichandran Ashwin, poised on 499 Test wickets.

He enjoys bowling to Ben Stokes, too. But the England skipper is equal to him in this over, including a lucky ricochet off the stumps from an attempted run out for an bonus run.

Cue more disappointing looks from Rohit Sharma.

I think Root just needs to watch how Stokes goes about batting (which varies massively) and believe that the captain and coach trust him to entertain in a Root way rather than a Pope/Duckett/Brook way... He's always scored fast enough!

A misfield from Axar Patel gifts Ben Stokes a boundary at cover, letting the ball through his legs village-style.

There is a look of pure disgust on Rohit Sharma's face. I think Axar might find himself at third man soon.

Ben Foakes calmly guides one down to deep third for four, and Bumrah retaliates by whizzing one past his off stump by a whisker.

Intriguing contest, as it always is when Bumrah is involved.

Both Tests so far have been decided by brilliant individuals. Pope and Hartley in Hyderabad and Jaiswal and Gill here. It's a sign of two very evenly matched teams and means we have an exciting series still ahead!

It's Ben Stokes' turn to get hit on the foot this time, as he gets in the way of a crisp straight drive from Foakes to probably deny him a boundary.

The pair look pretty relaxed, though. The drama has calmed down since the pre-lunch burst.

Stokes, the captain, often begins his innings in cautious, defensive fashion and plays himself in. Why don't the others follow his lead?

Lovely. Ben Foakes gets off the mark with a nicely-timed clip through mid-wicket as Jasprit Bumrah overpitches.

England now require less than 200...
