Ashwin bowling round the wicket on a pitch like this is a proper handful. Both edges are in play.

    Shot.

Jonny Bairstow crunches a sweep off Ravichandran Ashwin to pick up his second boundary.

    England need another 225.

Axar Patel is going at more than six an over today but he's being given a prolonged spell by Rohit Sharma.

He does look dangerous against Jonny Bairstow, who is willing to expose his stumps. He's only just equal to a low-keeping ball.

That is the Bazball that still makes me feel a bit sick. Root is so much better than that.

That wicket wasn’t surprising. I think it can only be down to the fact Root wasn’t fit enough to bat. And knew he didn’t have long at the crease before the pain was too much anyway. Because he’s never played like that in his entire career.

The early morning excitement is evaporating but bazball has been a roller coaster of emotions all along ... We have an exciting couple of hours ahead as this England doesn't stop believing even with 4 down!

Is the pressure building on Zak Crawley? It's been nine overs since his last boundary and that won't have happened too often, if at all, in the Bazball era.

There are yelps of excitement from the India fielders as the England opener nearly turns Ravichandran Ashwin into the hands of short leg.

How Crawley gets through this period will show his development.

Zak Crawley's foot was momentarily on the popping crease but he slides it back well.

It does then lift for a second, but the bails are already off.

Has Ravichandran Ashwin got his 500th Test wicket?

He beats Zak Crawley's outside edge and KS Bharat whips the bails off.

We're going to check the stumping.

A good over for England with nine added, including a gorgeous back-foot punch for four by Jonny Bairstow.

There's a nervy moment in there too though as Axar Patel just misses Bairstow's outside edge and the top of the stumps by an inch or so.

Root's intent was fine but he predetermined the shot and chose the wrong ball.

Root doesn't suit Bazball. I buy into it, but Root was a far better batsman prior to it.

A maiden from Ravichandran Ashwin, but there's hands on head as Jonny Bairstow inside edges a flick into his pads. He misjudged the length of that one.

Ashwin is just one wicket away from becoming the ninth man to take 500 Test wickets now.

Crawley is the first England batsman to hit 50s in both innings of a Test in India, since Strauss's twin centuries at Chennai 2008.

Jonny Bairstow is off the mark with an inside edge into the leg side.

England could do with a partnership here just to settle the game down again. They are still 243 runs from victory.

There are around 45 minutes until lunch.

That's a really weird knock from Joe Root. Skittish and wasteful. How much is that finger bothering him?

Soft. A skittish innings from Joe Root comes to an end.

Root tries a big shot over mid-wicket but slices it up in the air and Axar Patel is able to settle under it at point.

The England batter knew straight away, throwing his head back in disappointment. He departs for 16 off 10 balls.

This is the game right here you feel. Root and Crawley stay in for a while and England still have a say... if not - it's curtains!

    Joe Root survives. Just!

It is umpire's call on impact, with Root just getting outside the line of off stump. That is enough to keep Root at the crease.

There's a lovely little smile from Root when that was shown on the big screen.

Not yet. Axar Patel continues and it looks like Joe Root is going to attack him.

His skips down the pitch and plants him over long-off for six in superb fashion.
