Will India turn straight to Bumrah now Root has arrived?

Eek. He also brings out the reverse sweep to his third ball but he doesn't play this one anywhere near as well with the ball looping up off his gloves and over Rohit Sharma at slip for four.

Joe Root is the new batter. He reverse sweeps his first ball for four because why not?

Superb catch by Rohit. Slip catches off the back foot are pure reflex, because the ball comes in a flash.

    Pope c Rohit b Ashwin 23 (Eng 132-3)

    He's gone now though!

This is a really good catch from India skipper Rohit Sharma.

Ollie Pope goes onto the back foot and looks to cut away and Rohit only sees the ball very late as it flies past KS Bharat.

He has to react quickly but is able to get both hands to it and takes a sharp catch on his inside.

There's a huge roar in celebration from both Rohit and Ravichandran Ashwin, who moves to 498 Test wickets.

  7. Eng 132-2published at 28 overs

    Target 399

Ollie Pope is showing plenty of intent as he takes a few steps down the pitch and works into the long-on boundary.

It's good placement and timing from Pope but the India fielders were excited for a moment as short leg Sarfaraz Khan, who is on a sub fielder, almost read it.

Pope has 23 off 19 balls.

England scoring at nearly five per over, which has become the norm. The fielding team should be all over the batsmen in this situation, but instead the focus is on plugging gaps and having men in the deep rather than saving singles and round the bat.

You say 95% George, WinViz says 88%. The hosts are still overwhelming favourites but we'll keep our eye on how that changes throughout the day.

Just a single from Ashwin's over.

Morning!! Feels like Eng need a century from at least one of these two if going to have any chance of winning. Still feel its 95% India.

Ollie Pope looks like he's going to try and sweep England to victory.

He brings out the conventional sweep this time and crunches it to the square-leg fence.

England's vice captain then tucks fine off his pads and gets another boundary.

    13 off the over.

Half-century for Zak Crawley and brought up in style too.

He skips down the pitch and plants Axar Patel for a two-bounce four back over his head.

Two fifties in the game for Crawley, this one off 83 balls.

I just love the fact that we’re even talking about this chase as being possible - 4 years ago we would have written England off after day 2. It’s still highly unlikely, but at least it’s going to be entertaining, whatever happens. I believe!

I think the fact we’re even having a conversation of England winning this, or even being competitive, in this context - highlights just how game changing the Baz/Stokes era has become. We have absolutely no right to be in with a chance here… but we are.

This is going to be a nervous watch all day, isn't it?

There's disappointment on the face of the India fielders as Ollie Pope flicks just wide of short mid-wicket.

The hosts are then screaming for caught behind and a possible stumping as one bounces on Pope as he looks to reverse sweep.

Ravichandran Ashwin really liked it but Rohit Sharma, stood at slip, says no to the review.

Coming through that early Bumrah spell unscathed is a little win for England.

We're going to have our first bowling change.

England have seen off Jasprit Bumrah for now. Here's Ravichandran Ashwin, who picked up the wicket of Ben Duckett last night.

Currently following from Tokyo, Japan where play runs from 1pm until 9pm so it’s effectively a day/night test for me. It’s a shame that Bazball has got in the way of what was meant to be a very cultural trip, but there we go. Come on England!

Good Evening from Mount Maunganui, New Zealand. Watching the Black Caps and listening to England continue to change the face of Test cricket. Hoping to hear Zak secure the second double ton of the day in Test cricket following Ravindra’s knock earlier. If Zak manages it I’m sure it would be much quicker! Up the Kent!

Joe Root is carded to come in next. After the drinks session in the morning session on day three he was off the field after taking a blow on his little finger.

He was seen practicing this morning and he is padded up in the changing room so suspect he will be in next.

Zak Crawley picks up another boundary with a gorgeous whip into mid-wicket. I'm not going to jinx it, you can make your own assumptions about how he looks.
