This pitch looks absolutely shocking. Robinson might be an inspired selection.

Couldn't sleep so got up for cupa and planned to go back to bed. Can't now. Cricket too frantic.

Pretty sensible start for Root and Bairstow - so far. They tick the singles off Jadeja, who whizzes through his over in his characteristic style.

Bairstow must watch for the nip-backer early on.

Just the situation that Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow want to be in as they are searching for form.

Unlucky, Zak Crawley. He played very well there in testing conditions.

But what a debut for Akash Deep, three wickets already. It's all going on!

Bowled 'im! What a morning for the debutant.

It's another beauty, nipping through Zak Crawley's defence and clipping the top of off stump - a fast bowler's dream.

There is a little hesitation as Deep and India wait for the front foot confirmation, but it's fine, and Crawley has to trudge off.

He played nicely for his run-a-ball 42 but England now need to reset.

Huge toss to win but this track is a long way from the flat pitches that favour England’s aggressive batting style. If there was ever a time for ‘Bazball with brains’ this is it!

    Shot!

Despite the pitch, despite the two wickets, Zak Crawley is playing beautifully. He clubs Akash Deep through mid-wicket for four - and the debutant has overstepped again.

Someone could write a book about everything that has happened in this first hour.

  11. Eng 50-2published at 11 overs

Joe Root gets himself off the mark with a single and then calls for a change of bat.

Early nerves? Hang in there, Joe.

I think the umpires are going to earn their corn over the next few days.

    Called it, Tuffers.

Joe Root is outside the line. And breathe.

Blimey, you can't take your eyes off this for a minute.

Something is happening every ball. I reckon Joe Root is just outside the line but it shows that things are going to happen very quickly in this Test match.

    Another?!

Is Joe Root lbw first ball?

    India think so.

Very good review from India. Ollie Pope is shaking his head.

It didn't look right for me but it is what it is. England lose a couple of quick ones again.

That is a superb review. The technology has the ball jagging back to hit the top of leg stump.

Ollie Pope only lasts two balls and things feel very different now.

    There's no bat...

  20. India reviewpublished at 04:49 Greenwich Mean Time 23 February

Has Akash Deep got two in the over?

Ollie Pope had come charging down the pitch to his second ball and was hit on the pad.

    This looked high to me.
