Great ball from the debutant. It angled in and just nibbled away to take the outside edge.

A lovely piece of bowling. But I don't mind seeing England playing a few shots on this pitch because it is doing all sorts, and it's going to be a tricky one to score runs on.

Akash Deep deserved that. He’s been very lively this morning.

    Gone this time.

Akash Deep roars and beats his chest. This one isn't a no-ball and he has his first Test wicket.

It's a good ball too which has moved enough to take the edge of Ben Duckett's bat as he moved forward in defence.

Rather than waking early I've pulled an all-nighter. Come on boys, make it worth my while!

From Katherine (wide awake, but how long can I last?)

Ben Duckett responds by drilling a drive for four. He was almost at on his backside he was so low.

"He's a Duckettman," sing the England fans to the tune of Elton John. It's one of their better efforts, I'll give them that.

Jadeja’s manic appeal shows that India are already fretting that England have got a good start. He was like Pavarotti at the end of Nessun Dorma!

Ben Stokes isn't complaining about that rule now.

Has it straightened enough from round the wicket?

    Duckett hasn't hit it.

Ben Duckett misses one of his sweeps which spells big trouble. The India players appeal, appeal and appeal some more but umpire Dharmasena shakes his head.

After pleading like that they had to review.

Up with excitement to find we’d won the toss (yay!) but the pitch is a corrugated field (nooo!). Early morning rollercoaster of emotions.

I'm up early to get a session in before the kids wake up and we've to all get ready for school/work. I've a 10-hour shift to do today so might regret the 4am alarm later!

Rohit Sharma wants something different. Here's some early spin from Ravindra Jadeja...

That previous over from Mohammed Siraj which cost 19 has changed the momentum. The India fielders were all excitedly hopping around in the slips, expecting a catch off every ball, but now they've taken a punch from England.

    Great cricket.

It does remind me a little bit of Sabina Park in 1998 out there. Zak Crawley's mindset now is, if it's up, it's off!

I think that's a good attitude for the openers and they've got a good start in testing conditions.

Yup! Crawley has made his mind up. He knows there’s a ball out there with his name on it, but that's a wonderful lofted drive for six off Siraj.

    Woah!

Zak Crawley takes another boundary off the pads as Mohammed Siraj gets giddy in search of swing before he lifts the India seamer a mile back into the stands.

Even Crawley's impressed with that hit. I can see it by the smug look on his face.

Currently on the Caledonian sleeper back from Fort William to London. Struggling to sleep and so following the cricket. Hopefully England will still be batting when I make it to Euston...

Maybe Zak Crawley is hiding his hotline into Aggers' bedroom with his helmet.

The Kent opener drives Siraj through mid-off and flicks the next for back-to-back fours.

There's a lot of uneven bounce. Crawley is being hit all over the place.

Any width has got to go on this pitch.

  19. Eng 18-0published at 6 overs

Poor Akash Deep has to run in again with his no-ball being shown over and over again on TV. He's not the first to do that - both Ben Stokes and Mark Wood had their first Test wickets denied by a no-ball - and he won't be the last.

Deep pulls at his thinning hair as Zak Crawley chases a wide one and gets an edge for four.

Ouch! I tell you what, I'd be ripping up the sofa and wrapping it around me if I were waiting to come out to bat out there! It is doing all sorts - nipping, zipping, swinging, seaming.

And Crawley responds by walloping one straight back past him for four!
