The floodlights are taking effect now. It won't matter today but it will on a day the over-rate is slow.

    England, be warned.

The ball is still keeping very low, by the way. Maybe England's batters have become a bit more wise to it than they were earlier. Ollie Robinson just goes back and watches it right onto the bat by his ankles.

I was just about to write that Robinson calmly played out the rest of the over from Kuldeep but on the last ball Robinson unfurls a slog sweep and clears the boundary.

If you’re ever thinking about criticising Joe Root's batting - just don’t. England's greatest.

    Phil in Bolton

Joe Root, something about form, class and permanency! One of the very best to do it!

Niki, working (honestly I am) in Oxon

Cannot tell you how happy I am seeing Root score this ton. What an innings. What a legend.

Has there been a more popular century for England in recent times? It doesn't feel like it right now.

There are four overs left in the day.

Alastair: Root - what a shot to get to 100, what character and inner strength to do it in the context of a tough series, on an even tougher pitch. Batted beautifully in classical style. Surely one of England’s greatest, if not the best.

Suhel: Innings of the hugest quality! Roooooooottttt!

Matt: ROOOOOOOOOOT!! Class is absolutely permanent! Magnificent innings so far!!

This has been Joe Root's slowest century of the Bazball era and he has reined it in. There have been no scoops. He has just nudged the ball all around the wicket.

It has dragged England to a really good score.

    Phil Tufnell
    Former England spinner

What a top knock and a classical way to get there, too. That's the Joe Root we know and love.

I am so glad to see him back in form, to see him dig England out of a hole. He had to work very hard but he did it his way, the Joe Root way.

It's been a fantastic innings and could be a game-changing one.

    Class. Is. Permanent.

The greatest to ever do it for England gets to his 31st Test century with a cover drive that sums up this textbook innings.

He hardly celebrates. There's no smile from him but Ben Stokes is roaring in delight on the balcony.

Ramp it, Joe. I dare you...

  10. Eng 275-7published at 83.4 overs

The replays show that would have missed leg stump. A good decision.

And now Joe Root takes another couple to move to 99.

    Nervous?

  11. Eng 273-7published at 83.2 overs

An lbw appeal after Joe Root is hit on the pad!

    "No," says Rod Tucker.

The India players stand with their hands on hips. They can't review.

  12. Eng 273-7published at 83.1 overs

"Two," barks Joe Root after taking one off his pads. He does just that.

    97...

  13. Eng 271-7published at 83 overs

    Root 95, Robinson 12

Ollie Robinson biffs Ravindra Jadeja in the air down the ground for four as the spinner gets too full.

It's a good shot just don't get out. Simple, ey?

The India players seem to be getting a little edgy. Still no new ball...

  14. Eng 267-7published at 82 overs

    Root 95, Robinson 8

    I dare you, Ben.

It was these two batters in the middle on day one of the Ashes at Edgbaston, after all, with Root unbeaten on 118.

Chris Jones: Full Bazball would be for England to declare with five overs to go this evening and Stokes takes the new ball!

Paul Cotterill: I can just sense Stokes is itching to declare tonight and open the bowling himself to reclaim Bazball status for the day...

  16. Eng 265-7published at 81.2 overs

Oh no! That was some sort of optical illusion. The ball didn't hit bat it hit pad - and the ball tracking says it would have crashed into the stumps. Burning those reviews has cost India.

Joe Root, meanwhile, goes into the nineties with a four to fine leg...

  17. Eng 261-7published at 81 overs

Stuart Broad would be proud of the amount of pleading towards the umpire Ravindra Jadeja has done today. The spinner does so again in appeal for lbw, on and on he goes, but Kumar Dharmasena shakes his head.

The replays show Ollie Robinson nicked it and India have no reviews anyway.

Dharmasena has a word with Rohit - possibly for the appealing or maybe for Jadeja running right down the pitch while doing so.

  18. new ball

    Eng 260-7published at 80 overs

    Root 88, Robinson 8

Good running from Ollie Robinson nudges England along.

All eyes on Rohit and the umpire. They haven't taken the new ball yet and Ravindra Jadeja continues.

  19. Eng 258-7published at 79.3 overs

Akash Deep is warming up, a suggestion the new ball is coming. This old one may be reverse swinging a little but it was so hard to face earlier, India surely have to take it.

  20. Eng 257-7published at 79 overs

It seems Ravichandran Ashwin is currently leading India as Rohit Sharma has nipped off the field. Stay in your crease at the non-striker's, Joe.

There's one more over until the new ball, if India want it.
