    Root 75, Hartley 0

That partnership was worth 113. Useful but not match-defining.

Rehan Ahmed's absence means Tom Hartley is up a place at number eight.

The new ball is 12 overs away.

    What was I saying?

Ben Foakes loses his concentration a little and Mohammed Siraj strikes with the fourth ball of his new spell.

Foakes has just tried to clip it off the pads but ends up chipping the ball to mid-wicket.

Mohammed Siraj is coming back on.

I feel like Siraj is either brilliant or wayward. There's not often much in between.

  4. Eng 224-5published at 67 overs

    Root 74, Foakes 47

Scrap all that about BarryBall. BazBall is back.

Ben Foakes follows that six with two riskier sweeps for four to take 16 from the over.

  5. 6 runs

    Superb!

Ben Foakes, having been a little quiet, belts Ashwin over the mid-wicket boundary.

  6. Eng 208-5published at 66 overs

Jadeja flies through another over, adding more red to that stain on his shirt as he goes.

I'm not sure there's anything useful that can be done in the space of a Jadeja over. He's so fast.

  7. Eng 208-5published at 65 overs

As Ffion mentioned earlier, Ravindra Jadeja has opted against shining the ball with his trousers as is custom. He's instead doing it on his shirt in front of his chest.

It means he's got a red stain that looks remarkably like he's been shot in some sort of Hollywood death.

BarryBall. It's what the people want.

Root just manages to dig out one of those that skids low.

David Baxandall: So are we calling this Barry ball? Still the same thing, just what your Nan prefers to call you.

The TV pictures flick through a montage to show how Joe Root has been using his feet to expertly play the spinners in this innings.

I wish I could do something as well as Root plays bats.

In fairness, he could probably do my job better than me too.

  11. Eng 199-5published at 62 overs

    Root 68, Foakes 28

I announced earlier that if England got to 200 they'd be in the game. Well something would have to go very wrong for them not to. That was before the pitch flattened out with the older ball, however.

    What Daniel said...

The India fielders yelps as Joe Root gets an inside edge to the first ball of the session from Ravindra Jadeja.

Many people using this as a 'Told you so' moment against Bazball but I don't think Bazball is about just scoring as many runs as quick as you can but is just about playing without fear and making sure you back yourself with every decision you make and if it doesn't work out learn and go again. More often than not it will produce a fast scoring game but not always. This isn't Joe Root ditching Bazball but just shaking off previous innings and starting again without fear of failure.

Get yourself a good lawyer, Ffion. I'm coming for you after this slander.

My laptop seems to have mirrored this match so far. All over the place early on but calm in that afternoon session.

Both sessions have been thrilling so far, in very different ways.

What does the last one have in store for us?

Here's Matthew Henry to take you through it. Let's hope his 'laptop issues' don't disrupt him this time.

Great partnership between Root and Foakes under real pressure. It has been composed. They knocked it about, cut out risky shots, got themselves in and got the field set back. That will give them a lot of heart.

It's advantage Australia at Eden Park.

They have reduced New Zealand to 59-4 off 10 overs as the Black Caps pursue 175 in the second T20.

Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Marsh and Mitchell Marsh have a wicket each - one to a superb catch from wicketkeeper Matthew Wade.

England skipper Ben Stokes applauds the pair off the pitch, with Joe Root unbeaten on 67 and Ben Foakes on 28.

The run rate was considerably slower than the first session but at the same time, it never felt like it was stalling either. They were solid in defence but rotated the strike and were constantly looking to score.

The odd ball is still keeping low and the odd one bouncing too, so England aren't out of trouble yet but it's been great to see them put up a fight after a tricky morning.

Ben Foakes has played a lovely hand. He has been so controlled and sensible. It is exactly how you need to play to fight back into the game.

  20. Tea - Eng 198-5published at 61 overs

Having started the session in a pickle at 112-5, that has been brilliant from Joe Root and Ben Foakes.
