Down in Auckland, New Zealand will be chasing 175 after a bad collapse from Australia in the second T20.

The Aussies were 103-2 in the eighth over but were bowled out for 174 in the 20th.

Travis Head thrashed 45 from 22 and Mitchell Marsh made 26 to lay the platform before the innings fell away.

It would have been even worse but for 28 down the order from Pat Cummins.

    Follow the latest scorecard.

Kuldeep Yadav has looked threatening with his variations offering a little more uneven bounce.

Root blocks his way through another maiden.

    Roooooooot!

Back to his best in tricky circumstances. His 50 comes from 107 balls - it's been gritty, determined but he's also never allowed the run rate to stall. His strike rotation has kept India on their toes in his characteristic way.

He's found the perfect foil in Ben Foakes, who has also been very steady.

It's lovely to see Joe Root playing how Joe Root should play.

  6. Eng 174-5published at 48 overs

Joe Root, on 49, nails a sweep that looks destined to bring him a half-century but the ridiculousness of Jadeja's fielding at square leg prevents it.

I guess one answer to Adam might be that Foakes' innings, whilst not run-heavy, has allowed Root to score more than any other player.

Gervase in Manchester, who really should have got up by now

Has the pitch got better or has England's shot selection just been more sensible?

Ben Foakes drives Akash Deep through the covers for four.

  9. Eng 165-5published at 46 overs

Kuldeep Yadav gets a couple to keep low but thankfully, Ben Foakes is sharp enough on his toes to jab his bat down in time.

The partnership between Foakes and Root is now worth 53 from 22 overs.

Can we give Joe Root's late-cut for four a knighthood? It's a thing of beauty.

All well and good saying the pitch is behaving with sensible batting, if Foakes gets a low one next ball, who had the better innings, him or Bairstow?

    Glorious.

Ben Foakes with a shimmy down the pitch and the straightest of straight bats to drive Kuldeep Yadav for four.

One that you'd hold the pose for.

And that's drinks. A good hour for England.

India’s fielding has been poor today. They have let so many go through the hands for runs.

  14. Eng 156-5published at 43 overs

Four leg byes, as Akash Deep gets one to nip back and pin Ben Foakes on the thigh pad. That's the first bit of uneven bounce and inconsistency that we've seen for a while.

40 not out from 86 balls at a strike-rate of 46.51 is comfortably Root's slowest 40+ score in the Bazball era. Of all 40+ scores in that time, only Stokes' 41 from 89 in Rajkot last week is slower.

Just waking up? Here's a recap as things settle down after a wild morning session.

In the first two hours the ball was doing all sorts, I promise, and England were reduced to 112-5.

Zak Crawley took the aggressive option and, having already been bowled off a no-ball on four, crashed 42 from 42 balls in response.

That gave England a decent start in the circumstances but then seamer Akash Deep took two wickets in an over as India hit back.

Deep was majestic. He was the one to bowl Crawley with a no-ball but then had Ben Duckett caught behind, Ollie Pope trapped before knocking over Crawley for a second time.

Jonny Bairstow counter-attacked well with 38 from 35 balls until he was pinned lbw by Ravichandran Ashwin on the sweep and, on the stroke of the interval, Ben Stokes got one that effectively rolled from Ravindra Jadeja to leave England five down.

After lunch, however, Joe Root and Ben Foakes have batted patiently, things haven't been as dramatic and the pitch has looked easier.
