The steadiness continues. I'm not sure what to make of it. We've not had anything like this for a while.

There has been excellent discipline shown by Root.

  3. Eng 147-5published at 39 overs

Jadeja bustles through his 16th over, with figures of 1-36 so far.

Suddenly, with sensible batting, the pitch seems to be behaving. Funny that.

That was a beautiful square drive from Joe Root. He is looking more like the Root we know and love.

  5. Eng 146-5published at 38 overs

A boundary! Joe Root has been patiently waiting for this one and he's earned it, too.

Akash Deep offers a bit of width, and Root threads it through the off side for four.

  6. Eng 138-5published at 37 overs

Joe Root has battled his way to 33 from 80 balls and Ben Foakes has nine from 38.

    It's weirdly refreshing.

  7. Eng 137-5published at 36 overs

Akash Deep, with a Test debut of dreams so far, is back and searching for his fourth wicket.

Ben Foakes clips a couple off his pads for the only runs of the over.

  8. Eng 135-5published at 35 overs

On the food chat, I'm sure nothing will compare to the toast that I'm going to treat myself to after this live-texting stint.

Living the dream here, I know.

I actually quite like Lord's. Loads to love about a Test there. I was only saying the food here has been better. Nowhere's food tops Edgbaston, though.

Stephan hates Lord's - the members, stripy blazers, no beer snakes or Mexican waves or fancy dress. He has been doing the job long enough to understand every Test venue is different. He should ask the players where they want to play before they retire.

It's certainly a lot better for our heart rates, Michael!

It’s actually nice to see a bit of orthodox Test match play...

It's almost impossible to keep up with the speed of Jadeja's overs.

However, in those yellow-rimmed sunglasses and the luscious curls flowing over that headband, he's got to be one of the coolest-looking cricketers out there.

Sitting in an office in Hyderabad with my Indian colleagues, trying to spec out a new tech system, but failing because so much is happening on the pitch. Ollie Pope alone is responsible for at least two new features being forgotten... Apologies to all future users of the software of what is now being termed the "Ranchi" release...

Good point. Tom Hartley is a useful batter at number eight but without Rehan Ahmed, England's tail is a little longer.

I don’t think you can count on Robinson, Bashir and Jimmy Anderson getting too many runs so these next two partnerships need to get England beyond 200 at least.

  17. Eng 129-5published at 31 overs

    Solid.

Joe Root blocks his way through another Jadeja maiden.

The runs may not be flowing as freely as we've seen from England in the series so far but it's still a gripping passage of play. Just simmering along nicely.

Got a horrible feeling this terrible pitch might not seem so terrible if India are 200-1... Was batting first on such a wildcard pitch the right choice?

Trademark Joe Root, pushing the ball into the gaps and running hard for two to keep the pressure on.

Wonder when we'll see the reverse scoop.

    Too soon?

Now we're getting nearer the end of the tour than the beginning, it feels a good time to mention that the food the media have been given has been absolutely spectacular. Better than Lord's.
