I know this has been discussed several times before (and reasons given) but I can’t help feeling down about the lack of fans in the stadium. Imagine the rugby on Saturday with a poor crowd.

Whisper it, but England are playing this situation well. Nothing silly, but keeping the run rate ticking and not letting India settle by calmly rotating the strike.
It's impossible to tell what a good score is on this pitch but I reckon anything above 200 will be a solid effort.
Jadeja and Ashwin are working wonders for India's over rate. Don't think we'll need the extra half hour at the close today.
Joe Root and Ben Foakes calmly tick a couple of singles from the over.
Also, this is a great picture of the appeal for Ollie Pope's wicket. We initially felt it couldn't possibly be out because of how far down the wicket Pope was. DRS had other ideas.
Just saw a replay of that Stokes dismissal. Hard to do it justice but it genuinely shot about an inch off the ground - he had absolutely no chance.
He was laughing as he walked off and I don't think anyone could blame him.

First morning of a Test match and Stokes gets one that's rolled, literally. Yes Bairstow played a silly shot but the pitch is awful let's not beat around the bush.

Computer meltdown, or 5am nap? I'll let you, our loyal readers, decide.
It's actually me this time though, promise.
Ben Foakes gets through Jadeja's last five balls, as Stokes' wicket fell at the beginning of his over before lunch.
The players are back out there.
I'll hand over to Ffion Wynne. I'll be honest she did a lot of impersonating me during that session while I endured a computer meltdown.
Could you tell?

I can’t help thinking that Atkinson might have been a good pick. Quicker than Robinson and bowls a nippy full length.
Personally I'd say if England can scrap (or smash) their way to 200 then they'd have done OK.
Of course you'd love more but they'd be in the game.
Joe Root, as ever, will play a huge part in whether they can do that.

I’m pleading for calm. It was one of the most breathless, exhausting first sessions of a Test match I’ve ever seen. There’s been so much attention on the pitch and that’s produced uneven bounce and really exaggerated movement.
Is that 112-5 a good score? I’ve got no idea because of the state of the pitch.
Those of you just rising will also have missed the news that England leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed is to fly home from the tour because of an urgent family matter.
The 19-year-old had been left out of this match prior to him learning about the issue.
He will leave India later on Friday and England will not name a replacement.

I don't think any England player has particularly gotten out cheaply today like in the previous Tests. If Bairstow connected and hit that for four everyone would be waxing lyrical about it. You have to realise the pitch is doing plenty and this is likely to be a low scoring game. England fans are too cynical.

Indian authorities have taken a massive gamble with this pitch. It levels up the teams, bringing England’s spinners more into the game. India have won comfortably on the two previous tracks that helped only a small amount enabling India’s superiority to shine through.
I doubt it looks any better when you get up close...

England assistant coach Paul Collingwood and India coach Rahul Dravid have been out there at lunch, having a very long look at the pitch.
Just waking up? You've missed absolute carnage.
The ball has been doing all sorts and England are 112-5 at lunch.
Zak Crawley took the aggressive option and, having already been bowled off a no-ball on four, crashed 42 from 42 balls in response.
That gave England a decent start in the circumstances but then seamer Akash Deep took two wickets in an over as India hit back.
Deep has been majestic. He was the one to bowl Crawley with a no-ball but then had Ben Duckett caught behind, Ollie Pope trapped before knocking over Crawley for a second time.
Jonny Bairstow counter-attacked well with 38 from 35 balls until he was pinned lbw by Ravichandran Ashwin on the sweep and, on the stroke of the interval, Ben Stokes got one that effectively rolled from Ravindra Jadeja to leave England five down.

Joe is playing like the Joe we have watched and loved for many years.
If your morning alarm has just gone off, welcome - and happy Friday!
Unfortunately, England's morning has been a little less happy. We're at lunch with the score 112-5 - so let's have a recap of what's happened so far, which started with Ben Stokes winning the toss and choosing to bat first on a tricky-looking surface with plenty of cracks before a ball was even bowled on it.
And it didn't get any easier from there...
