Bumrah jags yet another beauty past Ben Duckett's edge, but there's some awkward bounce to deal with, too.

Duckett is not a tall man and the ball is thudding into the top of his bat, jarring his hands.

He finally gets one on his pads though, clipping past mid-wicket for three more. It's been a testing new-ball spell and the openers have done very well so far.

  2. Eng 9-0published at 4 overs

A bit of tension builds as Ben Duckett faces 10 dot balls, something he won't be enjoying.

He gets off the mark with a single from another testing Siraj over. It's a good batting pitch but these two have got to weather this early storm to make the most of it.

So the Tuk Tuk has twisted and turned to the foothills of the Himalayas, to beautiful Dharamsala. The mountain air is chilly, there is a surprising amount of good Italian food in the town and a trip out is guaranteed to involve bumping into a Buddhist monk or two.

Despite some awful reports, the weather is dry and actually a degree or two warmer than when we arrived on Sunday. The outfield is damp in the early morning, but much improved from the surface that caused so many problems during the World Cup.

England fans are here in abundance (I see you, two Stoke City flags), but there have been long queues to get in.

  5. Eng 8-0published at 3 overs

Oh, Jasprit Bumrah. We've missed you.

I'm not sure Ben Duckett has, mind. Bumrah sends him an absolute ripper that he actually does pretty well not to get an edge to. He's all squared up, and can only shrug in disbelief.

There's a bit of early swing for these two to navigate here.

Todwell: It’s a beautiful morning here in Dharamsala. Warm and sunny. It’s almost as if the locals know their weather better than a bunch of armchair meteorologists 4,500 miles away do!

  7. Eng 7-0published at 2 overs

Mohammed Siraj probes away at off stump and Crawley takes an almighty swish, but gets away with it.

And just as I'm about to type "be careful", he unveils the drive once more but nails it to the boundary.

    What do I know?

  8. Eng 3-0published at 1 over

Crawley clips into the leg side for three to get off the mark.

On another note, former England legends and current coaches Marcus Trescothick and Paul Collingwood have been officially confirmed as sub-fielders if necessary. It's because England are down to 13, with Ollie Robinson staying at the hotel with illness.

Now that would be fun to see.

The openers need to make sure they don't have too many preconceived ideas about how this pitch will play. There will surely be something in it in the opening half an hour.

    Left alone outside off stump.

Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett make their way to the middle and they are greeted by the familiar face (or foe) of Jasprit Bumrah.

Rohit Sharma will be thrilled to have him back - England, much less so.

    First ball incoming.

India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is also celebrating the same milestone, as he receives his cap from Rahul Dravid and is joined by his wife and daughters.

He hands the cap to his daughters, who look absolutely delighted with it.

On the other side of the coin, batter Devdutt Padikkal receives his debut cap in another proud occasion. India's new faces including Yashasvi Jaiswal, Dhruv Jurel and Akash Deep have been brilliant all series and he'll be hoping to continue that trend.

It is a beautiful moment for Jonny Bairstow. It will mean so much to his family because of the support they've given him.

He's shown resilience and determination. He's done it in the hard way. He's had 14 different periods in and out of the team.

It means so much to him to represent England. I know everyone who plays for England says it but with his backstory and his dad it does mean a lot to him.

An emotional start to the day for Jonny Bairstow.

He receives his 100th Test cap from long-time Yorkshire mate Joe Root and has his mum, sister, partner and son all with him this week.

Based on the pictures I've seen of the pitch, the first couple of days should be really entertaining from a batting perspective and it should be a challenge for the bowlers.

  17. 'An opportunity to finish on a high'published at 03:44 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March

India captain Rohit Sharma on TNT Sports: "Yes, we would have batted first too.

"Every Test match you play for your country is important. We have done really well in the series so far and this is an opportunity for us to finish it on a high.

"It looks like a good pitch, it's quite hard which might give us some good bounce that we haven't seen in the series so far. It will be good to bat on, obviously can't be too sure but I don't think it will deteriorate too much but just get slower as the game goes on.

"It's one of the best grounds in the world and we all love coming here. It's beautiful, a great ground and the outfield looks good too.

"Ashwin has been a stalwart of this team for a long time now and this [100 Tests] is a really proud occasion for him and his family. We will be rooting for him to work his magic and he has come a long way."

  18. 'A great tour for a lot of people'published at 03:41 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March

England captain Ben Stokes: "With the overhead conditions and just looking at the wicket and if you turn up at England with a wicket like this you'd probably have a bat. It'll be interesting to see what happens this morning.

"If you just look at the results and what we've done over the past couple of months, we haven't come away with the results we'd have wanted but if you look at the experiences some of our players have come away with as individuals and the progression they've shown is a real positive. It has been a great tour for a lot of people.

"It is another opportunity to go out there and represent your country and every game is an event in itself. Coming away at 3-2 sounds better than 4-1!"

On Jonny Bairstow: "Amazing. Jonny is one of our best ever all-format players. To play 100 Test matches shows the desire and commitment he's shown to the team. He's a very proud and emotional man."

  19. England win the toss and bat firstpublished at 03:37 Greenwich Mean Time 7 March

We've heard a lot this week that 3-2 looks a lot better than 4-1.

Ben Stokes takes a big step towards achieving that as he wins the toss, and chooses to bat first. It's quite cloudy, and not particularly warm - I suspect we may see a few woolly jumpers out there today.

Dharamsala is this week's venue and judging from the England players' social media, it looks like an absolute stunner.

I was lucky enough to visit Newlands in Cape Town last year and both are surely contenders for the world's most beautiful cricket ground?

England played a World Cup game there before Christmas but it hasn't hosted too many Tests.

But for a guide to the venue, here are some familiar faces...
