Summary

  • Worcestershire's Kashif Ali scores second century of Division One match against Warwickshire

  • Lancashire and champions Surrey manage 21 balls before play abandoned on day three

  • No play at Durham, Derbyshire nor Yorkshire on day three

  1. new ball

New ball taken at Edgbastonpublished at 11:07 British Summer Time 7 April 2024

    Warwks 304-5-5 v Worcs 360

Unsurprisingly taken at the first available opportunity.

New Zealander Nathan Smith will bowl to Dan Mousley.

The first ball is leg side and well taken by a diving Roderick behind the stumps.

Smith adjusts his line and Mousley leaves outside off - until the fifth ball, which is driven through the off side for three.

    That's the 300 in the 80th over.

The Warwickshire pass 300 in style via a lovely back foot drive through cover for four by Burgess. Beautiful shot.

Lyndon James has the ball for the first over. He opens to night-watchman Sam Cook, who gets a single.

That gets Dean Elgar on strike and the South Africa opener gets the opening boundary of the day with a slightly streaky edge.

  3. wicket

WICKET Finan c Carter b Seales 1published at 11:03 British Summer Time 7 April 2024

    Sussex v Northants 292-8

    Sussex strike early.

It's a bit of a slog from Michael Finan, who rocks back and tries to smash Jayden Seales through cover, where the ball is taken by Oli Carter.

    Ben Sanderson is in early.

  4. Day Three begins at Hovepublished at 11:01 British Summer Time 7 April 2024

    Sussex v Northants 292-7

The visitors threatened a big score at one point but Jayden Seales (3-64) played his part in restricting the middle order after reaching 177-2.

Left arm spinner James Coles deserves an honourable mention for very good control - and of course the crucial wicket of Northants skipper Luke Procter, who top scored with 92.

He also dismissed fluent stroke maker Saif Zaib for 36.

Lewis McManus resumes on 22 not out with debutant Michael Finan on one.

James Coles to bowl to McManus.

  5. Day Three begins at Edgbastonpublished at 11:00 British Summer Time 7 April 2024

    Warwks 292-5 v Worcs 360

Umpires Martin Saggers and Graham Lloyd are in the middle.

Warwickshire trail by only 68 but Worcestershire will be buoyed by the run out of Jacob Bethell just before stumps last night and the availability of the new ball one over into the third day.

Dan Mousley will take guard on 56 not out. He's joined by Michael Burgess on one.

Jake Libby to bowl to Mousley from the Birmingham End.

  6. Somerset start reply at Canterburypublished at 10:59 British Summer Time 7 April 2024

    Kent 284 v Somerset 0-0

After no play was possible on day one at Canterbury, Joey Evison top-scored with 85 to push Kent to 284 all out on day two against Somerset.

Somerset begin their reply this morning with Matt Renshaw and Sean Dickson opening the batting for the visitors in blustery conditions.

  7. Game very much ON at Trent Bridgepublished at 10:58 British Summer Time 7 April 2024

    Nottinghamshire 293 v Essex 253 & 65-1

Play is going to begin on time at Trent Bridge, with 99 overs scheduled for the day.

This match is the furthest along and is intriguingly poised. Both teams looked set for big scores, only for Dane Paterson on day one and Sam Cook yesterday to wrestle it back with the ball.

Essex will resume 25 ahead and will everything to play for in this game, with a result either way very much on the cards.

  8. Warwickshire and Worcestershire ready to reap the wild windpublished at 10:54 British Summer Time 7 April 2024

Morning preparations are well under way at windy Edgbaston.

And although it's blowing a Chris Gayle, and there is rain almost everywhere else in the Midlands - and all around the country - it looks like they will start on time for a third day running.

It's still really far from being decent cricket weather. And it's still a month earlier than the cricket season used to be back in the good old days.

But the Pears and Bears have put on a pretty good show for the last two days, given all the doom-mongering from the weather watchers that preceded this game - and, although it is very, very windy, they are going to give it a go.

"It's really not much fun out there," said an Edgbaston official.

  9. rain stops play

Early lunch at Headingleypublished at 10:52 British Summer Time 7 April 2024

    Yorkshire 72-2 v Leicestershire 354

For the third successive day, there will be no play in the morning session in Leeds after more overnight rain.

There will be an early lunch at 12.30 BST, with a pitch inspection after that.

  10. rain stops play

No play this morningpublished at 10:51 British Summer Time 7 April 2024

Derbyshire v Gloucestershire - yet to begin

More miserable news to report from Derby where yet more overnight rain means that there will be no play before lunch.

After two days with no cricket, you have to start to wonder if we will get any play at all in this match.

Durham v Hampshire - yet to begin

More frustration for the players of Durham and Hampshire, as conditions are still not fit for play at the Riverside and sadly, the umpires have had to pull the plug.

Weather permitting - we'll have a battle for bonus points tomorrow.

    What's this? Sunshine in Manchester!

No, it is not a mirage. That is some weak early April sunshine. But do not be fooled. In the early hours, it was absolutely chucking it down.

As a result, the start is delayed for a third day in a row and we will have a pitch inspection at 11.30 BST.

One of the enduring beauties of county cricket is that no two days are ever the same.

Yes, the weather is having a huge part this week, but we still had a hat-trick from Sam Cook for Essex yesterday, a fine century from Joe Clarke and career-best figures for Cameron Steel.

And of course, history at the Home of Cricket courtesy of Sam Northeast's astounding 335 not out.

What will day three offer up? Let's find out over the next few hours.
