  1. Early lunch at Old Traffordpublished at 13:08 British Summer Time 7 April 2024

    Lancashire 202 v Surrey 15-0 - rain delay

And there we go... the covers are still on and it has been announced that we are going to have lunch at 13:10 BST.

That is 10 minutes later than normal, but 20 minutes earlier than had been scheduled for today given the 12:30 start.

  2. 'The outfield is so wet it's struggling to take more rain'published at 13:07 British Summer Time 7 April 2024

    Lancashire 202 v Surrey 15-0 - rain delay

The outfield is so wet it's struggling to take more rain, so this swirly shower that we've got is enough for the umpire to say 'we need to get them off'.

Such is the strength of the wind that changes almost minute by minute, it might be scheduled to blow to the east of us or west or wherever, but the wind is so strong that those showers that we think might might miss us come and get us which what has unfortunately happened.

The ground staff are dragging out the covers to protect the square.

It's not helped by the wind, the rain is bad enough but you try to get the covers down and the wind is rattling around.

I'm afraid it's a waiting game now with another swirly shower passing through, which is edging more likely towards the idea that we might take lunch.

  3. Postpublished at 13:06 British Summer Time 7 April 2024

    Kent 284 v Somerset 98-1

We're getting our first look at leg-spinner Matt Parkinson, who was a regular in England Test squads a couple of years ago and is now looking to rejuvenate his career with Kent.

A decent first over from the former Lancashire man - a maiden.

  4. Lunch at Lord'spublished at 13:06 British Summer Time 7 April 2024

    Middlesex 252-3 v Glamorgan 620-3 dec

Middlesex milk five runs off Colin Ingram's final over before the interval to clock up their first batting point.

Leus du Plooy and Ryan Higgins have steadied things after the loss of Mark Stoneman and Max Holden in quick succession.

But they trail Glamorgan by 368 runs and are still 217 adrift of avoiding the follow-on.

    Lots more batting required!

    Notts 293 v Essex 253 & 138-5

A very hard-fought session of Division One cricket ends with a single off the over from Dillon Pennington.

Essex have only added 74 runs and lost four wickets and they lead by 98.

Two wickets in two balls from Brett Hutton were crucial to help Notts turn the screw.

Matt Critchley and Paul Walter will need a strong partnership after lunch.

  6. Lunch at Edgbastonpublished at 13:03 British Summer Time 7 April 2024

    Warwks 333 v Worcs 360 & 46-1

Shot! Kashif Ali moves to 26 with a gentle push in front of square on the leg side.

Worcestershire will be buoyant going into lunch after wrapping up the Warwickshire innings promptly with the new ball and batting with great fluency thus far.

  7. 'Lyon and Hartley can play together'published at 13:00 British Summer Time 7 April 2024

    Lancashire 202 v Surrey 15-0 - rain delay

    Mark Church
    BBC Radio London commentator

This is nicely set up with the cricket that we saw yesterday. It was a fascinating day.

Lancashire being stuck in by Surrey at 13:10 yesterday and 202 all out.

It's going to be very interesting to see how Lancashire go about this, there wasn't a lot there for the seamers yesterday and if we can get in the 80 overs today I think we'll see a lot of spin from Lancashire and that's a good thing in the shape of Nathan Lyon and Tom Hartley.

Can those two play together? Yes they can and we're hoping we'll see them bowling together a lot of overs today.

  8. Postpublished at 12:59 British Summer Time 7 April 2024

    Sussex 43-0 v Northants 371

Ben Sanderson bowls to Tom Haines, who defends into the on side.

He plays and misses the last ball as it thuds into the gloves of keeper McManus.

    Maiden over.

Chris Tremain bowls with good pace at the other end.

Clark gets a single off the first ball and Haines gets a rather streaky four off the fourth with an edge wide of the three slips and down to third man.

  9. Postpublished at 12:58 British Summer Time 7 April 2024

    Kent 284 v Somerset 94-1

With lunch approaching, Matt Renshaw and Tom Lammonby are laying a solid platform for the visitors at Canterbury.

Renshaw is 10 runs short of a half-century and Lammonby is on 32, with the pair's second-wicket stand now worth 69.

  10. Postpublished at 12:58 British Summer Time 7 April 2024

    Notts 293 v Essex 253 & 138-5

That is a very reassuring way for Paul Walter to get off a pair!

He uses his long levers to push a drive off Lyndon James past a despairing dive at mid-off and it runs off for four.

  11. Postpublished at 12:53 British Summer Time 7 April 2024

    Warwks 333 v Worcs 360 & 34-1

Kashif Ali is in the mood today and gets his fourth four with a lovely back foot cut off Chris Rushworth.

Really great hand speed through the line of the ball.

Rushworth tightens his line and Ali leaves at the last moment.

  12. Postpublished at 12:50 British Summer Time 7 April 2024

    Notts 293 v Essex 253 & 130-5

'Tall' Paul Walter is on a pair as he comes to the crease.

Notts' seam attack will make him work to get off the mark.

  13. Postpublished at 12:50 British Summer Time 7 April 2024

    Sussex 37-0 v Northants 371

Shot! Tom Haines moves to 25 with a drive through cover for four off Ben Sanderson, who nonetheless has bowled tidily for 0-9 in his four overs to date.

First bowling change for Northants as Chris Tremain joins the attack.

Tom Clark is forward to drive but it hasn't been times and Tremain fields off his own bowling.

A big lbw shout fifth ball is turned down by the umpire.

Tremain is on bended knee for that one but it looked a bit leg side.

  14. rain stops play

Rain stops play at Old Traffordpublished at 12:46 British Summer Time 7 April 2024

    Lancashire 202 v Surrey 15-0

After 21 balls, the rain arrives and the players head off to the dressing rooms.

    It's very squally and unpleasant.

  15. wicket

WICKET Westley c Clarke b Pennington 22published at 12:46 British Summer Time 7 April 2024

    Notts 293 v Essex 253 & 129-5

Tom Westley plays a shot for EssexImage source, Rex Features

Notts' tight bowling brings its reward!

Dillon Pennington gets his first of the innings as he makes Tom Westley nudge at one on or around fourth stump and it's another catch behind for stand-in wicketkeeper Joe Clarke.

Westley's 72-ball innings is brought to an end.

This is turning into an excellent morning for the hosts, with Essex still only 89 ahead.

  16. Postpublished at 12:45 British Summer Time 7 April 2024

    Warwks 333 v Worcs 360 & 26-1

Too much width from Rushworth and Kashif Ali is on his toes, thrashing the ball through third man for four.

The fifth ball is an absolute peach. Ali is forward to defend and the ball whistles past the outside edge.

Beaten again in identical fashion to end the over. Well bowled.

  17. Postpublished at 12:44 British Summer Time 7 April 2024

    Kent 284 v Somerset 76-1

Kent have turned to the off-spin of Jack Leaning as they bid for further wickets before lunch.

Somerset have lost just the one wicket so far, with Sean Dickson caught at slip off the bowling of George Garrett.

Garrett has taken 1-16 from his six overs, and fellow seamer Wes Agar is back after a decent new-ball spell of six overs that went for just six runs.

  18. 'Samson' Burns at the creasepublished at 12:44 British Summer Time 7 April 2024

    Lancashire 202 v Surrey 15-0

Rory Burns guides one past the slips down to a gap at deep third.

But in a sign of the outfield, the ball slows up noticeably and Luke Wells is able to run from slip and limit it to two runs.

Another striking thing is that Burns' long locks have been trimmed for 2024.

His hair is not flowing out from under his helmet this season. Let's hope there is no Samson-like effect to his batting!

  19. Postpublished at 12:42 British Summer Time 7 April 2024

    Sussex 31-0 v Northants 371

Lovely cover drive from Tom Haines off Michael Finan, but Saif Zaib will pick that up and keep it to one.

Finan bowls a good line to Clark, who defends off the back foot.

The fifth ball is wider though and Clark smashes that through cover for four.

  20. 'Bears got the breakthrough they wanted'published at 12:40 British Summer Time 7 April 2024

I don't think it Chris Rushworth's best delivery but in the end he won't mind too much because it just touched through to the keeper and they've got the breakthrough they wanted.

That's the sixth wicket to fall of the morning session.

A big wicket after Gareth Roderick batted beautifully in the first innings, they'll be pleased to see the back of him in the second.

Worcestershire do need to be careful that these Warwickshire bowlers don't make inroads in their early innings.
