McLaren’s Lando Norris dominated the Singapore Grand Prix to take a further chunk out of Max Verstappen’s advantage in the championship.

Verstappen, who finished a distant second in his Red Bull, is now 52 points ahead of the Briton with a maximum of 180 available over the remaining six races.

But Norris was deprived of an extra point by Daniel Ricciardo, after Red Bull’s junior team RB fitted soft tyres with a lap to go so the Australian could take the fastest lap from the Briton on the final tour.

Despite Norris’ imperious win, the average points gain by which he needs to eat into Verstappen’s lead still went up slightly to 8.7 a race.

Norris’ McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri finished third from fifth on the grid, passing both Mercedes drivers on track after a later pit stop.

  3. 'I put my best foot forward and maybe the fairy tale ending didn't happen' - Ricciardopublished at 15:39 British Summer Time 22 September

RB's Daniel Ricciardo on his future told Sky Sports: "I have to acknowledge why I came back after the McLaren stint and I always said I didn't want to come back just to be on the grid, I wanted to fight at the front and get back with Red Bull.

"It didn't come to fruition, I also have to ask myself the question of what else could I achieve and what else is there to really go for.

"I put my best foot forward and maybe the fairy tale ending didn't happen, but I also have to look back on what it's been, 13 or so years, I'm proud.

"Typically on getting driver of the day, it's not something us drivers look into but today I can say it's something I'm appreciative of, that means a little something."

Red Bull's Sergio Perez tells Sky Sports that today was a "total nightmare" for him. The Mexican finished in 10th place in Singapore and found it difficult to pass the likes of Nico Hulkenberg in the Haas.

Max Verstappen is now without a win in eight races but the Dutchman's bid for a fourth consecutive title will still be in a healthy place if he continues to finish second to Lando Norris in the remaining six grands prix.

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella spoke to Sky Sports about Lando Norris' performance: "Hopefully we will have a few more in the next six races. Fully deserved by Lando, he has been very quick throughout the weekend. Everything came together, it's not going to be easy over the next races but it's very promising.

"It's also promising that Oscar found a way to beat the two Mercedes to get on the podium.

"The mission is still on for the drivers' championship."

Pop princess Kylie Minogue was waving the chequered flag at the end of today's Singapore Grand Prix, but now we have a long wait to see who gets to do the honours at the Circuit of the Americas.

The calendar has a four-week break until the next round of racing at the United States Grand Prix on the weekend of 18-20 October. After the pause, there are two triple headers to finish the season, with the last race in Abu Dhabi taking place 6-8 December.

When we return, there are three sprint events in Austin, Brazil and Qatar for drivers to pick up points, which could be crucial in terms of the title fight between Lando Norris and Max Verstappen.

  10. The car was exceptional this weekend - Piastripublished at 15:15 British Summer Time 22 September

McLaren's Oscar Piastri, who finishes third, said: "It was warm. It was a good race, a good recovery from qualifying yesterday. It wasn’t my greatest afternoon, so to get back to the podium was a great result.

"I felt like I had a really quick car underneath us and a really good strategy to get past the Mercedes. A big thank you to the team as clearly the car was exceptional this weekend and some great points for the whole team."

Asked if there was any difficulty in the race, he added: “I didn't hit anything. It was a bit close with George at Turn One but once I got into third I had a massive gap to try to close up. I didn’t want to take too many risks."

  11. P2 is a good achievement - Verstappenpublished at 15:11 British Summer Time 22 September

Max Verstappen, who finished second at the Singapore Grand Prix: "I think that's pretty much my race just by myself. Trying to do the best I could, trying to manage my own pace to the end.

"I think the first stint was a bit difficult for us. Quite a bit of tyre degradation. The second stint was better, I was a bit more comfortable as well. On a weekend where we knew we would struggle, P2 is a good achievement. Of course we are not happy with second. Now we need to improve more and more and that's what we will try to do."

On his championship lead being reduced to 52 points: "That can change quickly again. We need to keep on trying and at one point try to overturn it a bit, not always finishing behind. But, we will see how that goes."

On the tough race at Singapore: "It always tough around here - warm and a very long race in general. I'm looking forward to a bit of a rest."

  12. I wanted to have the biggest lead possible - Norrispublished at 15:07 British Summer Time 22 September

McLaren's Lando Norris, after securing his third win in F1: "It was an amazing race. A few too many close calls. I had a couple of moments in the middle but I was well in control otherwise.

"The car was mega so I could push and we were flying the whole race. At the end I could just chill. It was still a tough race. I'm still out of breath but a very fun one."

On the brushes on the wall, he added: "I mean it wasn’t necessarily over-pushing. Sometimes it could be that you were chilling too much. It could be a bit of both, I don’t know what it is. It was tricky and still tough out there, easy to lock the tyres like I did.

"I didn't want to have a one-second lead, I wanted to have the biggest lead possible. It was fun - maximum points and nice to have Oscar on the podium. He drove well so a good day for the team."

On it being his toughest race physically, he said: "It was similar to Qatar last year, but I wasn't taking it easy. I could have taken it a lot more easy. A little dizzy at the minute but all good."

All three have reached the podium to cheers from the packed crowd. God Save the King is cued up on the speakers and members of the McLaren team below sing out. Lando Norris is then handed the trophy and lifts it with glee.

David Coulthard is doing the post-race interviews and at the end of his chat with race winner Lando Norris, he dumps a big jug of water all over the McLaren driver. Can't quite tell whether Norris was happy with that soaking or not.

We cut to the cooldown room and Oscar Piastri and Max Verstappen are dissecting the race while watching the highlights. Now Norris joins, to a round of applause, and the trio collectively yell "woah!" as footage shows George Russell getting close to the wall.

There are more cries as Norris' wall taps are shown. Piastri jokes that, without using bad language, how did he feel in that moment?
