One man that is taking part in the mountain bike cross country short track race on Thursday is Great Britain's Tom Pidcock. Well barring any late issues, that is.

Pidcock, who did not compete at the men's road race last Sunday, is down to do the short track and cross-country event in which he is the reigning Olympic champion.

The 24-year-old comes into both having finished 13th on the road last month in this year's gruelling edition of the Tour de France.

Three-time world road race winner and seven-time green jersey winner Peter Sagan is also expected to ride the short track race.

The Slovakian announced earlier in 2023 that this will be his last year as a road cyclist and he aims to qualify for the cross-country cycling competition at the Paris Olympics in 2024.

Now then, a quick look ahead to tomorrow.

His name is down on the start list but there are several reports knocking about that Mathieu van der Poel will not be competing in the mountain bike cross country short track race.

The newly crowned men's road race world champion from the Netherlands has been spotted training at Glentress Forest but has apparently changed his mind due to the injuries he sustained in his late crash in Sunday's road race.

He may still of course participate and do something in Saturday's cross country race but after opting not to take part in any of this spring's mountain bike World Cup events, Van der Poel, will not be able to start from the front row and would have his work cut out getting through the field.

That said if he were to somehow triumph in that event he would become the first male rider to secure world titles in cyclo-cross, road and mountain biking in the same season after winning the UCI Cyclocross worlds in February.

Last night he was winning World Championship silver, this morning he was announced as a Strictly Come Dancing contestant!

GB's eight-time Paralympic champion Jody Cundy will be swapping his bike for the ballroom later on this year.

"Strictly is so far away from what I'm used to, but I'm looking forward to the challenge and pushing myself way out of my comfort zone, especially as I'm always last onto the dance floor," he said. "Can't wait to get stuck in, bring on the glitter and sequins!"

More from Great Britain's women's sprint gold medallist, Emma Finucane, speaking on BBC Three: "I like to focus on me and what I am doing because you can get carried away. I was in the zone and quite aggressive. It is a mental game which I quite enjoy but I just focus on me.

"My parents have been here all week but had to leave yesterday so I called them and my boyfriend. It was super special

"It is super exciting for next year. I feel we have the momentum now. We are coming for sure."

"I have found what works for me on the gym and the track. The gears are getting a bit crazy now.

"I definitely wasn't cool and calm. I was so nervous deep down. I had to go to the toilets a couple of times to reset. I wanted to go up there and be aggressive but I knew what I wanted to do.

"We will celebrate tonight for sure. For the next couple of weeks I will take some time off the bike and enjoy it."

Women's sprint gold medallist Emma Finucane speaking on BBC Three: "I really wanted it from qualifying in the flying 200 I knew I had the legs but over three days you really have to focus.

"Another side of me came out today and it definitely paid off. I gave everything I could on the track in that final and I am super proud.

"It's definitely a big thanks to my coach, we also got second in the team sprint and we have stepped up this year. I crashed in the keirin but that gave me so much motivation and confidence today. I owe this to her. I gave everything I could for every race and it paid of. I don't think it'll ever sink in.

"I need to get going quicker. I was delivering myself at that bell lap fully committed and it paid off every time."
