It's was certainly an exciting afternoon at the first ever Champions League of Darts, with world number one Michael van Gerwen and 16-time world champion Phil Taylor opening up with wins.

I can't quite claim to have made an entrance on a par with the fanfare of my colleague Phil Cartwright earlier.

Forget the hand-slapping and banging tunes - the arrival at my desk was more akin with three-time world champion John Lowe.

Low-key, composed and with a touch of class.

Old Stoneface won't be taking to the oche tonight - but what I can promise you is an evening of top-class arrow-slinging with the best eight PDC players on the planet.

Robert had Michael thinking at the halfway stage, but that's why Michael's the world number one.

It's the mark of a great player that you can win when you're not quite playing at your best and he won quite comfortably in the end.

Two maximums in the final leg for Michael van Gerwen, who wins it 11 darts to clinch a 10-5 victory. Robert Thornton was excellent early on, but the world number one took control after the interval.

Van Gerwen breaks in 13 darts and the big Dutchman is feeling a little happier about things now. He's one leg away from victory, and a match-up with Phil Taylor later on this evening.

Three in a row since the break for Van Gerwen, who lands 74 for an 8-5 lead. It's far from vintage MvG, but he does this quite often. He'll throw in a poor performance early in a tournament, and then be completely dominant for the rest of the event.

Michael Clothie: Delighted to see the darts back on the BBC. Absolutely cracking match-up with big Thornton showing the fighting spirit.

We said Robert had to get the better of the early exchanges and he's more than done that. Being super critical, he could have been in the lead.

It's on a knife-edge.

That's Russ Bray, known as "The Voice". And yes, he always sounds like he could do with a throat lozenge or two.

MvG looks angry. Well, more angry than usual. A 180 lifts his spirits, but he missed a chance at double to break and Thornton is level at the interval.

Missed doubles all over the place. MvG eventually takes it. This is some contest.

Oh Robert, that's superb. A 113 outshot levels the match at 4-4. Can he keep this up?
