Break: Phil Taylor 7-3 Peter Wright

    Mark Webster
    2008 BDO world champion

Phil looks the part. He's not giving Peter a sniff, he's defending his throw with ease and he's taken out some big finishes to break Peter.

    Phil Taylor 7-3 *Peter Wright

A four-leg lead for Taylor at the interval, who does a quick Thunderclap himself before leaving the stage. He's in control.

    Paul Nicholson
    2010 Players Championship winner

Taylor's getting rid of things in better than six visits. That's hard to beat. Peter needs to lift his average by three or four points and he might start causing a few problems.

Wowzers. A 122 finish from Taylor - simply fantastic. A second break of throw for Taylor, who is averaging about 105 right now.

    Phil Taylor 5-3 *Peter Wright

Wright's 180 puts pressure on Taylor's 32. But Taylor doesn't feel pressure very often. His first dart lands in double 16 and it's 5-3.

    *Phil Taylor 4-3 Peter Wright

Wright hits a 170 to put the pressure on Taylor's 121 and he fails, giving Wright the chance to reduce the gap to a single leg once more. He's still a break down, though.

More form like this and you wouldn't rule out more in the future for the 56-year-old from Stoke-on-Trent.

Taylor takes out a phenomenal 154 finish to hold throw. The only bad news is that it's got a Viking Thunderclap started in Cardiff. No need.

    *Phil Taylor 3-2 Peter Wright

Wright needs a leg, and wins the fifth. Taylor's level slips slightly and Wright stops the rot.

    Phil Taylor 3-1 *Peter Wright

Stop it, guys. This is just ridiculous. Both players open with a 180. What was that I said about no fireworks in leg one? Since then, we've had a whole New Year's Eve display.

Taylor misses the chance for an 11-darter, Wright narrowly fails to take out 135 on the bull, and Taylor mops up for 3-1.

    *Phil Taylor 2-1 Peter Wright

Taylor hits a 177, Wright responds with a 180, Taylor responds with a 180. Awesome stuff, just awesome. Taylor wins it in 11 darts and breaks the throw.

    Phil Taylor 1-1 *Peter Wright

Taylor brings the crowd to their feet with the first 180 of the match, and then takes out 125 to level the match in 12 darts. Vintage Taylor.

No fireworks in the first leg, as Wright takes it in 18 darts.

Has any player dominated their sport for so long as Phil Taylor has in darts? For more than 20 years, he was the icon, the master, the man nobody could dethrone.

He's 56 now, yet he is still ranked fourth in the world, among the main contenders to win any major event and adored by the darting public.

It's a much more sedate entrance by the 16-time world champion.

While there's a slight break in play, I must mention the truly wonderful achievements of Dave Clark this week.

Clark presents Sky Sports' coverage of darts and has been living with Parkinson's disease since 2011.

He and colleague Martin Turner completed a 200-mile coast-to-coast walk on Friday in aid of Parkinson's UK. An amazing effort.

Almost £42,000 had been raised on Dave's JustGiving page at the conclusion of the walk - with donations up to £50,000 being matched by Sky Sports.

And there was a little something extra to add to the pot, courtesy of the PDC...

    Phil Taylor v Peter Wright

It's more than 20 years since Phil Taylor played a match televised on the BBC.

"I'd love to do a nine-darter on the BBC and I'd love to play well because it's a different audience," he told BBC Sport.

"People will be watching who can't afford Sky, or can't afford to go to the pub and watch it."

James Wade speaking to BBC Sport: "I’m shocked at how Adrian played. Adrian didn’t play how he can and I made the most of that. In moments I was really good, and in moments I wasn’t."

    Hugely impressive from Wade.

The 161 before the break hurt Adrian more than we thought. He's got time to regroup before tonight, and James will be buoyed by that.

He'll be thinking: 'Everyone's talking about Van Gerwen, Taylor and Anderson, but I'm still here too.'
